This is a fun video to watch (9 min 35 sec). It must have been made by the Strickland family to document Spencer's effort in the 2008 mandolin competion at the Galax Fiddler's Convention. I enjoyed watching it maybe others will too. No shortage of mandolin content! :)
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and a great New Year to all.

Great video! I should be able to play like that in about 40 more years!

Yeah Spencer can play, in fact his whole family can play.
Interesting how he plays Rawhide. I have always heard and was taught when I learned the tune that it was played 90% by the right hand but watching Spencer's version (everyone has there own version of Rawhide right? LOL) it's like he plays it mostly with the left hand, lot's of notes and lots of harmonic melody as opposed the following the Monroe version which is kind of the basic standard of the tune.
But of course I have heard many, many versions of Rawhide and it is always interesting to see what someone will do with it.
It is like listening to fiddlers and all their different versions of Orange Blossom Special.
And with that said Spencer's version of Rawhide sure beats MY version of Rawhide! LOL! :mandosmiley:

That is a great analogy! So true. And yes he plays the RAW out of that hide.
That was a great video! Thanks for posting it.

hey everybody! thanks for all the compliments on the video! this was all put together by my good friend, and "Director of Tourism" for the city of Galax, VA, Chuck Riedhammer (who is also the commentating voice throughout the video). i'm pretty sure no one in my family is quite this good at video editing LOL!!! my favorite part is when gerald (who is the maker of Anderson Mandolins, and the mandolin i was playing in the video) was interviewed, and of coarse, my mom just being herself on camera LOL LOL :))!!!
thanks again Chuck, and i'm glad everyone's enjoying it!

Man you'd think that with the crowd (many thousands) they draw to the Fiddler's Convention now a days the Moose would get up off a liitle more prize money than $110.00 bucks for mandolin champ!
At least throw in a new mandolin or something! :))

I agree with ya jim-n-va. For a festival of that size $110 doesn't seem appropriate.

Spencer, don't you play the mandolin with fingerpicks, ala Wayne Henderson? I thought I saw that at the Richmond Folk Festival and was quite impressed with your technique!

Spencer plays with a flatpick. Gerald Anderson plays guitar and mandolin with fingerpicks, though.
Gerald putts with a putter. Spencer putts with whatever he has left!
Gerald and Spencer have been building some fine guitars and mandolins. Check em out!
