I've peoples peghead designs, shops, and new designs, but what does the sign outside your shop look like? I plan on cutting mine out this weekend if the weather isn't to bad. Come on lets see your unique advertising!

Not really 'unique advertising', since I live 20 miles from a 2 stoplight town, 1/2 mile up a 3 wheel drive driveway, and the shop is hidden behind the house, but my mom found the blank sign in an antique shop decades ago and I carved the mandotop part on my duplirouter years ago.....

Thanks Skip. Wave maker just think you can use the sign if you run out of wood for the top.:))
Mike man I know I've been busier than a one armed paper hanger. Some weekend when your band is goin to jam somewhere let me know and I'll showup and try to keep up with ya'll. I called you back one night but nobody answered. Merry Christmas to you and everybody. Later and cheers!!

Bill, you should add the words "World Headquarters" to that sign.

Just make sure your brakes are in good shape if you're going down Bill's driveway. It's pretty scary!
The shop looks good,Bill. Are those prayer flags?
Namaste...and Merry Christmas!
Cheers!

This guy is five feet tall and about forty inches wide. I carved him with a chain saw. All one piece including the bow. I started with a sitka spruce log that wasn't suitable for soundboards. I had planned to carve other musicians but this fellow is as far as I got.
I'm just not crazy about letting everyone in the neighborhood know what I do... ~o)

I love the signs but I'm with Hans. Where I live I don’t want to advertise a bazillion dollars in tools and instruments. No windows, security doors and the perimeter is armed and unmarked.

Gail, you may have missed Han's point. Where he lives mandolin builders are thought to be a little odd. On the other hand, if you build accordions, those folks are highly thought of. :))

You're right Mike but that brings up a good point. I could make a shop sign that said I build accordions and then I'd have lots of privacy.:))
Actually, I live in a Norwegian community as well, Poulsbo. Stan Boreson usually makes an appearance next door once a year with his famous accordion.

You can see our sign on our website. It is a pretty big sign but we need it so they can see us from the road. It certainly makes it easier for people to find our shop than the old banner we used :) .

I'd be terrified to put up a banjo sign in my neck of the woods- it might cause a stampeed!!! 'Gotta be careful what you wish for-last year a fellow called up asked about doing a refret on a telecaster. Trying to be polite about it and chase him away, I told him I had a backlog of prewar Martins, so if he wanted it done next week, it would cost $550. I figured he'd never go for it; 20 minutes later he showed up at the door, brought in three more over the next two weeks, and posted my name on some vintage tele website saying I was the guy... I'll stick with the no shop sign for now...

I was doing something really dirty, can't remember exactly what, had on a pair of grungy coveralls, not fit for human sight one day when this pickup truck came up the driveway. A guy and his wife got out and he said "you're hard to find! You should put up a sign shaped like a guitar or somethin' so people can find you!".
Seems he heard about me somewhere, started asking people until he found someone who knew where I live and just showed up unannounced.
I got the impression he didn't get the message from the look I probably gave him that people like him are one of the reasons I don't have a sign shaped like a guitar or somethin'!
If you're in town and have walk-in traffic, do any retail selling, actually have a public "face" to your business that's one thing, but you just have a shop out back, live out of sight of the road, value your privacy, and don't want to advertise the possible presence of valuable instruments and tools, well that's another thing altogether!

John, you need no "face" for the public. I think the look you gave him probably said everything necessary.
On a personal note, despite your warnings, I don't have gout. It be Arthuristus in me big toe.

Where I live, I can only have my business license if I don't have a sign, or anything that looks like a business. I definitely prefer it that way for security reasons.
Same as Andrew, here where I live in Maine. It is called a "Tradesman zone" which allows up to two employees and no sign. In tourist-crazy Maine, you would definitely not want a sign unless you charge admission

It's not mine, but this is a photo of Larry Hopkins' shop in Pekin, Indiana. That's me picking up the mandolin Larry made for me last July.
