View Full Version : vintage fret smoothing?

I've just got a 1924 Weymann (love at 1st sight). Only one complaint: the frets have high edges that make playing a glissando a bumpy & uncomfortable ride. Can such frets be filed down or replaced? If so, can someone recommend a trustworthy place to have this done? (The fingerboard has lots of nice inlay work that I wouldn't want to risk spoiling.) Or, do I just get used to the bumps? Many thanks!

Congratulations on your new Weyman; I'd love to see photos here if you can. From your profile I see you're in Indiana; the MC data base lists a builder in your neighborhood, just search under your state or town. It's a place to start. Also, as always, Frets.com has some wisdom on the subject:

Crowning would be a stop gap; you may have to replace them before too long. I'm sure others with more experience will chime in.
