I am new to the site. I have been playing guitar for over 20 years and about 4 years ago I bought a mandolin. I teach guitar and should probably spend all of my practice time developing my guitar playing but I just can't do it. Instead, I spend half my time learning mandolin tunes and developing my understanding of this wonderful instrument. I wish I could turn kids on to "Weezer" on a mandolin but I don't think they would go for it. I am looking forward to being a contributing member to the message board.

Welcome aboard.........
Lots of knowledgable folks here, who are very willing to answer any questions you may have, and plenty of interesting discussions occurring constantly.
You have discovered what all of us have, that the little mandolin is very addicting.

the little mandolin is very addicting.

G'won! Say it isn't so! Say that this glazed expression and the double grooves on the end of all four fingers is just a momentary fad!

welcome, mandojam!! i still know just a little less than squat about mandos, but i know i still want to learn. i've found the mandolin cafe an outstanding forum for anyone, be they wishful thinkers, newbies, ole pickers....if you want to know, all you have to do is ask/look. there is a huuuuuge knowledge base here, and these folks are happy to share it in a straightforward and often very humorous manner. good luck, have fun, and happy pickin!

Life's too short to waste it on a mere six strings.

I recently made the same transition, after many years of guitar. All of my guitars are now gathering dust with all of my attention focused on this little 8 string wonder! :mandosmiley:

I switched after a severe shoulder injury made guitar playing intolerable. Bought a used Wasburn and can't put it down. I find I can play bluegrass far easier on the mandolin than guitar, probably relegate the guitars to strumming backup, assuming I heal well enough to play one again.
