I am a freshman music major at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain. This semester I have been studying piano with a teacher in order to be able to get my degree because I have to take lessons every semester on an approved instrument (I am a total beginner at piano). The music department has decided that they want me to study mandolin instead because it is my primary instrument, and are willing to make it work by allowing me to take lessons outside of school. I need some suggestions for good teachers within a couple of hours of Chattanooga (Nashville, Knoxville, Atlanta, Birmingham, etc). I play mainly classical music, but I am also very interested in jazz. Basically, I'm not looking for a strict bluegrass instructor. I am looking for a more stylistically diverse teacher. So far Matt Flinner is my primary option.

Tammy Rodgers-King of The Steeldrivers teaches at Belmont University in Nashville. They have a commercial music program that graduates lots of fiddle players and a few mandolin players.

Try Jason Bailey out of B'ham. He's a phenom!

Much better than the tunes on myspace lead you to believe.
