Yesterday i played a normal 3 fingered E chop chord and it just didnt sound right. I guess the fingering was right because it was in my mandolin primer instuctional book. We have a gig Sunday and we need a simple normal E. There is no 2 finger chord that i know of and if there is i tried it. My grandpa came over and played it too and he said its just not an E. And yes i tuned it right before he came over. Someone tell me a normal E that will sound right fast!

Hi,
I'm wondering if your intonation might be off? That could make the notes up the neck out of tune. Maybe playing a chord closer to the nut would help. If you fret the G# on the 4th string (1st fret), the E on the 3rd string (2nd fret) and the B on the 2nd string (2nd fret) you should be good to go!!

Hope this helps!!!

..or...cover your G and E strings on the fourth fret using your middle finger and ring finger and cover the D and A strings both with your index finger..

Here's a 2-finger E chord (well, kinda). Fret the D & A strings at the second fret, and then fret the G string at the 4th fret. I use one finger to cover both D&A strings, but you can use two or bar it. This isn't a true E chord, as it only contains the root and 5th, but it does the trick.

john s.....thats the E i use a lot. it works for E and and Em because it is missing the third. i have seen a lot of top notch players use it. in fact i use it for E, Em, F, Fm, F#, F#m....(of course you have to move it up the neck to get the other chords). i think it should work for what your trying to get at PGAfan.

4-2-2-0 or 4-2-2-4 as others have said are the easiest for me. The first one is the only one I know that uses all 4 strings and only 2 fingers.

You can play 4-6-7-4 too, but it's a higher-sounding one. That chord can be easily moved around, of course, like most others on mando.

I had a problem similar to that. Turned out the nut was too high and I was putting too much pressure on the G# resulting in it going sharp. Before you do anything to your nut, just try playing the chord with less pressure.

I had trouble finding an E chord that I liked too...The aforementioned 4-2-2 works well, and I also like 4-6-7-7 or even easier 4-6-7-0 or you can forget about that pesky 1st string and just go with 4-6-7-x
