Dear NG,

I take photos with my Cannon camera, download them to the computer and they are just too big for posting at the cafe. What is the best method to make the photos to the correct size for posting? I have windows imaging and an adobe product (that came with my camera) on the computer, but neither have a menu selection that seems to take me to where I need to go.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions (perhaps a shareware utility?)

I use Corel Photohouse, and under "Image Properties" there is a category for image size. Other programs are probably similar. I have often had to make several reductions to get an image small enough to post on the Cafe. I work from an image already downloaded from the camera and saved on a zip disc or CD.

Try this free one: http://www.irfanview.com/

You can resize the pictures under the image menu. Works great!

Hi Fatt-Dad,

Windows XP/2000 have a very handy software called PhotoEditor, which is usually located here:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PhotoEd\PHOTOED.EXE

To resize your photos for posting:
1) Open your image with PhotoEditor
2) From the [Image] menu, select [Resize]
3) Adjust the Height/Width to the desired value (Rule of thumb: for web posting, shrink the longest side to about 640 pixels)
4) Click [OK]
5) Select SAVE AS... from the [File] menu and save your resized picture with a different name as the original, unless you want to overwrite your original large file.
6) Select JPEG as the [Save As Type], and adjust the [JPEG quality factor] to about 60 or 70.
7) Click [Save]... You're done!

There should also be a function in your adobe software to do this, usually, [Image] Menu -> [Image Size...]

Thanks all,

My IT guys apparently did not install the photoed utility along with Win2000 and I cannot download *.exe files. So, I remain paralized. Thanks for the good feedback, though. One of these days, I will get figured out.

fatt-dad, if you have Powerpoint on your computer, there is a quick and dirty way to do this. #You can copy the image taken with your camera onto a Powerpoint slide and then reduce it down in size or crop it to make it smaller. #

You can then go to "file" and select "save as". #Save the slide as a JPEG using the pull-down menu and when prompted, just export that one slide. #If you find it is still too big, go back to the Powerpoint slide and reduce it further, or crop it even more.

Fatt-Dad,

What Adobe stuff did you get with your camera? I've most of them, and I can probably walk you through the one you have...

grandmainger,

I probably received all sorts of good stuff with my camera, but the office IT ######'s wont install it as it is not "supported software". (Don't get me started.) So, I will try Django Fret's PowerPoint method. . . . . .

Stay Tuned for photos (I hope).

Well thanks to Django Fret!

The powerpoint method worked flawlessley. Here is the image of my Flatiron A5-1, which I tried to post on the A5-1 thread. It started out at 543 kb and ended up at 26 kb with little effort on the powerpoint side. Whoo Whoo!

p.s., credit to Gruhn for the original photo. That's where I bought it. Now, I have to work on my own photos - ha.
