go to rootsmusicreport.com you'll find out what others like, then go to any of the various esales sites and you can usually listen to a portion of a track. Bluegrass unlimited also reviews cd's.

Or go to countysales.com and look at their quarterly newsletters, with reviews of new releases. All they sell is bluegrass, old-time, and related material.

was released late last year, but all mandophiles should have "Hold On We're Strummin" by Dawg & Sam

Mandopete,
on your recomendation I'm thinking about picking this one up. One question, hows the mandolin? sorry 2 questions, Are the songs easy to pick up and playalong with for practice?

New Blue, the mandolin player is not a Wayne Benson but he has his own style. Kind of a milder Bill Monroe sound. You can definately hear the influence. Maybe thats why they named the band after Bills favorite horse. It is very easy to play with, and fun also. You won't be disappointed.

The mandolin playing in superior (IMHO). #Reid Burgess gets a very bluesy sound into the mix, which as I stated earlier, is a quite refreshing change from many of the other young players.

Funny thing you should mention about "playing along with the songs"...I like to jam along with CD's and I was picking along with this one just last night. #The tunes are not complicated at all and very easy to follow and a lot of fun to play. #I especially like "Broke Down and Lonesome"

I was very disapointed that my local Barnes and Noble did not have King Wilkie. They had a reasonable BG selection but nothing "new".

OK I ordered the new King Wilkie from Amazon.com. Hopefully in about a week I'll give my review.:)

It's not new, but check out Johnny Staats and Robert Shaffer "Pickin' up Steam". I'm eagerly awaiting another release from Johnny. Anyone know when it's due out?

Very Cool!

I would second the votes for David Davis and Open Road. Both of those new releases will also be on my Top Ten for 2004!

The new Mountain Heart recording, Force Of Nature, is pretty good. #It's very progressive, so if you're expecting traditional styled bluegrass you might be disappointed. #Some great singing and some tasty mando work from Adam Steffey.

BTW.....

There are articles on both Mountain Heart, Adam Steffey and King Wilkie in this month's edition of Bluegrass Unlimited.

I also vote for David Davis & the Warrior River Boys. #I work with the guitarist here is St. Louis, and had a copy as soon as it was out. #I fell in love with it right away. #I've learned to sing one of the songs already, and am learning a second.

One of my favorites from this year (maybe late last year) is the newest from laurie lewis and tom rozum (guest house). nothing too flashing but solid all the way through. i think they make a great team.
