I'm thinking about maybe getting on a builder's waiting list and wondered if anyone has had a chance to play both of these maker's mandos? I'm not really looking fot "which one is better?" (although if you think one is, please share). But what are some of the main differences or characteristics, if any? One main difference is the price (BRW = ~3500 Pomeroy starts at 2800). They both seem fairly low cost for what you get. I've only played BRW #6 for a minute or so (thanks Scotti) and it is truely an amazing mando, and have not played a Pomeroy (I know looks aren't everything, but they do look fine. BTW, anyone bring either to Rockygrass? I'd love to take a look if that's alright.

i have never played a brw but i have played my pomeroy. non stop since i got it as a matter of fact. it is all i wanted and then some. i doubt i will ever get rid of it or feel the need for a better mandolin. i might buy another mandolin in the future, maybe even a brw, but it won't be because i need anything better. don was great to work with, his waiting list isn't very long, his craftsmanship is great, and the tone on mine is wonderful from the beginning.

I think Mzbanjo stated his question quite fairly; he asked about characteristics, not report card grades. "Great" craftsmanship, or "wonderful" tone aren't what he's after.
If a Pomeroy had hit the Classifieds before my BRW I'd probably have purchased Don's instead.
Compared to a few recent Gibson A's I tried at Gruhns recently I think the BRW A has a deeper more complex vocal tone, not as much in the treble end. The BRW is a heavy instrument too.
