I notice that the newer recordings have the music louder than the vocals, in the "good ole days" the vocals were loud and understandable but I have trouble understanding the words on most of the newer recordings...Am I alone, is it just my hearing? I run them trough an EQ box and try to get it to where I can understand the words but no luck....Any feed back on this? ....Willie http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

You are not alone; I'm right there with you. For the past several years in most all music genres, music has been mixed louder than the vocals. There still remain a number of producers/engineers who value the vocals but there are too many who mix up the music way too hot. It almost seems like the beat is most important element in these recordings. "Lyrics? We don't need no stinkin' lyrics. Just pump up the bass."
I find the same approach in many live settings. Of course there are some vocals that dearly need to be lost, but that's a different story.

This thread reminded me of something I have wanted to ask some of you who know more than me......On some recordings I have, one that comes to mind is some DL&Quicksilver and some Monroe stuff, you can change the balance and on the right you have all the background music(;-))with a little bit of mando and on the left real heavy mando. sometimes its really heavy vocal. Why was it mixed this way?
