View Full Version : Under The Bed

I'm familiar with how to keep mandolins in good shape by keeping them in their cases, not leaving them in cars in hot weather, dealing with humidity, etc., but I've read a few articles that state, "Don't store your instrument under the bed." Other than the possibility that your bed may collapse and fall on your mando, why shouldn't you keep it under the bed? It seems like keeping it under the bed is as good as keeping it in the closet (in the case, with good closet ventilation)?http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif?

Don't know for sure, but my first guess would be that you should store it with the case sitting on its side as opposed to flat on the ground. Either that or you might forget its under your bed and find it years later http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Umm . . . you see, they're not telling you that under the bed is a bad place to STORE your mandolin, they're saying it's a bad place to KEEP it. In other words, you should be practicing the little bugger instead of letting it sit under your bed and collect dust for weeks at a time.

my guess would be because if you have windows in your room, under your bed will be hot and kind of steamy. the reason is because most of everyones bed has a comforter of some sort on it. which means it over hangs the bed on the sides and almost or does touch the ground. this is kind of like a greenhouse effect. the heat that the sun produces comes in from the window making it hotter in the room. therefore making it ever hotter under the bed because there is little to no air cirulation under it. which means if you have a mando in its case under there the mado is going to heat up in the case. and everyone knows that is not good for the mando. however i am no expert, that is just the only reason i can think of. another not so good thing to do is leave your mando on the stand in front of a window that gets a lot of sun. my friend did this and the part of the neck on the mando that touched the stand started to almost stick to it(it was a newly varnished mando).

Put a thermometer under the bed. If anything it will probably be cooler than the rest of the room - not hotter.

"If the bed starts a rockin', your mando may take a knockin'!" http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
If there's lots of dirty socks and athletic shoes under there the mando could become prematurely distressed. Oh wait, that's a good thing

I always thought "under the bed" was a descriptive selling term analogous to "driven by a little old lady only on Sundays to go to Church". As in, "this here man-olin was mostly kept under the bed and rarely played."
