View Full Version : Snakehead neck vs. Collings "wider nut" neck

I may have the opportunity to get a Collings MT model with the "wider nut". Having played a Gibson Snakehead A model for 25 years, and not having the chance to try out the Collings in person, I am wondering how different the feel of the neck might be. Has anyone made this kind of transition? I have big hands, so I don't think that will be the issue. Just how much wider is the Collings from a snakehead? I've been told that the neck is a little chunkier. I wish I was able to visit a store that carried these mandolins, but unfortunately, that's not an option. I would be most grateful for any help.

FrD,I have played a snakehead(1923) for 10 years or so. I tend to do well with narrower/slim necks;and,I have smallish hands.
Personally,I don't really prefer wider necks/nuts;but,lots of players do. If you have big hands you should like a wider nut.
It is a wrestling match for me to play a 'teens' F-4... Feels like a baseball bat in my hand.
That being said, one can seem to get used to any neck shape on a great sounding mandolin. (The hammer shapes the hand.)
Hope you can play the Collings before buying.
Regards,
Mike

In the interim since posting this topic, it appears I'll be able to get a regular Collings, and not the wider neck. Thanks for the feedback.
