Scotti, I'm amazed that Mr. Compton isn't surrounded by listeners/admirers in this picture. I'd really like to chat with him about his friendship with the late John Hartford; I'll bet he has some great stories to tell.

..yep...me too Willie.....Ken the only reason Mikes not diluged with fans at that moment in the pic is because T. Rice just stepped on stage....in one of those pics you can see Mike had just turned to look towards the stage...I was lucky to see him with Hartford....Hartford was trying to his hardest to buy my olg Gil that I had...kept wanting me to put a price on it...I wouldnt..so he starting throwing figures at me...although those numbers sounded good...I opted to keep the Gil for a few more years after that only to sell it to pay for my future ex wifes divorce.

Cool pics Scotti,

how was the show pretty good I assume.

Did Rice play with LRB?

I was bummed that I had to miss it (although boating at Lake Cumberland is always worth the trip:-) The Bluegrass CLassic / MACC is coming up this week so that should be fun. #This thursday is my birthday and that is the night of the Bluegrass Album band Reunion...can't wait to celebrate.

What were Compton's comments on #6? He played my Snakehead A JR last year and said "Mine is way more trashed than this one" #lol

..Ethan..at the risk of ticking off the BRW police...wouldnt want to do that....lets just say Mike thought it was a great piece of work and he said that he really loved how it rang with sustain and the low woody sound its got and how loud it is....In his words.."That thing has flat got it" Yea..Rice played with the LRB...the man never ceases to amaze me.....he was playing stuff I had never heard him play before....never missed a lick...of course he didnt sing any....I talked to him for a while...he really sounded bad....it made me hurt just listening to him talk. Thats gotta be one of the biggest travisties in BG music..the day T. Rice lost his voice. Have a happy birthday..I imagine Ricky Wasson(JD Crowes singer) will be doing T's singin parts on the BAB reunion....hes a good sanger too..should be a good show...I cant make it..Im going camping this weekend....

I'm sorry, I just crawled out from under my rock....

Can you give me the details of Tony Rice losing his voice? What's the cause and/or prognosis? I can't imagine bluegrass without his voice!

Tony lost his extraordinary voice to a medical condition called muscle tension dysphonia. He can talk..very low and gravely...but cant sing.

Not to compare myself to Tony Rice at all....but I've had similar events happen to my voice, where it's similar to laryngitis (as I describe it); the voice gets an octave or so deeper, and gravely and singing is out of the question. I'm 40 now and have had it happen a few times, so far unexplainedly, however I'm in North Carolina and am trying to equate it to the springtime pollen season-- maybe I'm allergic and never knew it? I'll do a search on muscle tension dysphonia and see if that fits my ailment too. As I say, I'm not sure if it's a fair comparison...maybe mine is simply allergies or laryngitis; it's frustrating though, since I have no other 'allergy' symtoms (runny nose, scratchy throat, watery eyes) that you would think would have led to laryngitis, etc. Good news is my particular ailment does go away, after about 2 weeks http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Here's wishing Tony a speedy recovery...

..I think this malady is more associated with polyp like growths in the vocal chords...Ironically...John Starling of Seldom Scene fame and an Ears, Nose and Throat Doctor operated on Tony. As far as the speedy recovery...dont think so...hes been this way probably more than 5 years...its a bummer..I thought his voice was the best.

Agreed on the Tony vocals. He was the best. He looked like he wanted to sing those songs too. I know I wanted him too, even though I like Brandons voice. He's definetely still got his licks. I was surprised more to see the Santa Cruz guitar and not the old Martin. He must be breaking that out more now. Cool pics Scotti. I wish I would've taken my camera.
