Yep. Going scrolless (sp). After e-mailing some sketches back and forth we have a design and Larry is beginning the patterns. Ridiculously exciting !
Larry's kinda pumped too !

Good for you and congratulations! I don't envy you the waiting, but you're going to enjoy that mandolin in your dreams until the real one shows up. I hope it turns out to be exactly what you were wanting.

A way cool way to help pass the time, might be to post the sketch - if both you and the builder are okay with it. I would enjoy seeing the sketch! Following from concept to finished instrument is always a blast!

Here's the body shape. It will have a 1 piece back carved from a slab of off-quarter sawn maple that I was able to select from 3 pieces Larry had.

It looks as though the larger point has the potential to grow into a scroll, if properly fed and watered. If this is not your intention, you may be faced with regular pruning to maintain it's shape.

Construction well underway. Looks like about a month to go. Trying to finalize finish and binding. Tough decisions when there are so many options. Decided against varnish. Leaning towards a dark finish with black binding.
I now need to part with my Collings MT. # 556. Nice 1 piece back. Wonderful sound. In the classifieds.

Nugget-esque.

I am a 2-point fan, and scroll-free since 2005!

I love the look of the blonde natural wood with the dark binding.

The headstock is a beaut.

Glenn Stevens out of Fredericksburg Texas has a similar F5 style under way: blond finish with black binding. Don't think it is spoken for yet. His hand made violins start at 10K and don't hang around long. He quoted something like 7K for the mandolin.

That's actually bare wood in the photo. Final finish will be medium dark, with the top darker than the back and sides. Although when Larry first sent me that photo I was quite struck by the blonde look.
