Here is a picture of some Birds Eye Maple that Spruce reclaimed from the floor of a house built around the turn of the century...G

That's great to see that wood after milling, Gavin. #This is the first time I've seen it milled.
#
The original boards (milled in 1888, by the way) were pretty funky to look at with nail damage on the sides of the boards, but I knew there was some interesting F5 side wood in there...

This thread should encourage anyone who might have a building materials recycling business in their town to periodically check out the stock for mandolin wood.

I've commonly found some wonderful quartersawn Douglas Fir one-piece F5 tops that were over 100 years old for a buck apiece, as well as boards of figured maple salvaged from barn beams.

The old wood definitly has a mystique to it.
That birdseye, for instance, had tons of dance-marks on the surface, and some nice figure in the wood itself...

That wood is beautiful, Gavin. #

I have access lots weathered 120 year old (old-growth) red wood boards that don't have a knot in them. #Supposes it'd make for nice wood in a mandolin?
