I am considering a rosewood Big Muddy for an alternate sound. I have only played one mid-mo about 5 years ago and remember the tuners were nothing to write home about. Have they been improved on the newer models or are they pretty much the same?

I would think, .. if you ask and specify what you want, they [maker or retailer]will install nicer tuners .

the bottom line is the bottom line , a cheaper tuner is a part of a lower pricepoint.

The ones on my recent Big Muddy aren't anything fancy, but they work as they should. They turn smoothly and hold the strings in tune just fine. I recently sold a Mid Mo mandola that was at least a few years old and the tuners looked about the same. I ordered the Big Muddy through Gryphon and I'm sure I could have specified different tuners.

never had a problem with my Mid-Mo. Combined with Jazzmando JM-11's and that thing just won't fall out of tune no matter what!

When they were Mid-Mo, their standard tuners were the P2695's at the bottom of the URL page below, or equivalent:

They are useable, but not great. Mid-Mo's "upgrade" tuners were Grover Sta-Tites, tuners you don't see offered for sale or see discussed much. They are the G304C's you see about 2/3 down the same page. They are less costly, and I think smoother, than the regular pearloid-button Grovers. I'd imagine Big Muddy could still do the same upgrade, or you could you could just order a set of the Sta-tites and replace them yourself. They go right into same bushings and screw holes as the econo tuners. So as long as the originals were installed right, it's a simple operation.

Thanks folks! When I make the plunge I will call and ask about the option of upgraded tuners though it sounds like the ones that come on it work fine.
