Okay, caught the two of them last night right here in Huntington, Long Island, N.Y.

Grisman had the Giacomal with ToneGuard, an early Monteleone mandola. and a banjo mandolin. Sebastian had a couple of guitars (one Gibson, the other looked like a Martin), a banjo, autoharp, and harmonicas.

Lots of stuff from the "Satisfied" CD. About 4 'Lovin' Spoonful' tunes. 'Shady Grove'. Great stuff.

Grisman played VERY sweetly. Noticed he used everything from his elbow down for tremolo. I also noticed how much of the thumb on his left hand was visible when he played. Just beautiful.

Everything he played just fit perfectly and smoothly. It was a delight to see and hear. Lots of stories, laughter, and tight playing.

Try to catch them.

The stuff Grisman tends to do with the Quintet I'm not that big a fan of. This was altogether different and entertaining.

Not a fan of the Quintet? Wow... :disbelief:
Eitherway, sounds like a good show.

I know, I'm in a minority.

Don't get me wrong - some of their stuff is wonderful, but a lot of it just isn't my cup of tea.

Interestingly, they didn't play anything from the "Old & In The Way" CDs.

Good show, though.

You may be in the minority, but you're certainly not alone. I've known a number of folks over the years who have been turned off by Dawg music but many of them have liked Old And In The Way, Grisman's early Rounder bluegrass album, and the Garcia/Grisman stuff. Frankly I was blown away when I first heard the Grisman quintet in 1979 or 1980 and it prompted me to pick up the mandolin. One of the amazing things about David Grisman is the fact that he can cross genres into Klezmer, Bluegrass, Folk, Jazz.... and it all sounds "right" so if you don't like one style you're still likely to find something he does that turns you on.

I'm not a bluegrass guy at all, but I did love "Old & In The Way". I also liked all his other stuff from the early days.

Too much of the Quintet stuff just doesn't do it for me. Either way, no denying the musicianship of the man. Awe inspiring.

It must be wonderful to be able to play any type of music with such taste.

And it was a hoot for me, being a retired hippy, hearing them do the Spoonful stuff - "Daydream", "Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind", and "Lovin' You".

They did a great job on "Shady Grove" as well. Just a lot of good music.

Whenever Grisman plays in this area, it's always with the Quintet, so this was a real treat for me.

I caught their act two weeks ago in St. Louis. I like both performers well enough, but I have to admit I have not really been a huge fan of either in any of their professional incarnations. But their show together was a great evening of music. They have put together a show that really works and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. They are both great musicians and great entertainers. Even if you are not a follower of either of these guys, I highly recommend it. If you are a follower, you should do whatever it takes to see it.

Quote: Grisman had the Giacomal

I thought that what it was but I have not seen a 2-point Giacomal. It was not the F Giacomal
I was good to see him play Mandolin King Rag. He gave me some new licks for it.

I saw them last week at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. Great stuff! It was the first time I had heard the Giacomel in person, and I thought it sounded wonderful. How much of that is the box and how much of that is Dawg is hard to say. I've seen Grisman act as "sideman" once before (with Doc Watson) and his ability to enhance the music without needing to steal the spotlight is enviable.

Speaking of stealing the spotlight, the McCoury Boys opened (a last-minute substitute for an ailing Ralph Stanley), and man, were they hot! Grisman joined them for one tune, and watching Ronnie and the Dawg trade licks was one of my all-time favorite mandolin experiences. Yow!

John,

Send me a PM next time you go see a show like that. I don't think I could drag my wife to a BlueGrass show, but maybe we can meet up. Sounds like a great show (to me).

You guys are so lucky to have them tour thru your neck of the woods. That almost never happens in Arkansas. The Quintet played here a couple of times in the past and I thought they were outstanding. Usually we have to drive pretty far.

Not a problem. My wife isn't a music fan either.

Trouble is, shows like that seem to be few and far between.

Slightly different subject but I dragged my wife to a DGQ show last year. Had to promise that it wasnt' bluegrass and is was not. She loved it.

Well, this duo will not be in this area, from the looks of it. But looks like the Quintet will take up a residency at Jazz Alley in Seattle in Jan. Interesting...

No one seems to like Houston so stop yer b!tchin. haha.. just teasing, fellas. I feel your pain and frustration. The closest this tour is to me is North Carolina.

BTW, the very first song I ever learned was Japan by DG b/c everyone told me learn a song you can stand playing forever so I did. It was really tough at first and I didn't know what I was doing but now, almost 5 years later, I go back to it and still learn from it.

I love the Dawg and his talented playing.

My wife and I will be attending the Peekskill show on Sat 10/18. Does anyone else attending care to get together for a cup of coffee or a bite to eat?

Quite a lovely show.

I really enjoyed the sweet sounds that came out of the two (or was it three) point light colored mandolin (the Giacomal J3?).

When he switched to the F style, it was noticably darker (maybe it was a mandola?) ...much more "bluegrassy" so to speak. I was glad when he switched back <s>

For one number, David played a banjo-mandolin and John played a 6 string guitar-banjo... quite the combination, and wonderful sounds.

John Sebastian's voice was all but gone by the end of the session, but we enjoyed every minute of the concert. We bought a copy of their CD during intermission.

Thanks for the heads up... a good time was had by all (and lots of foot tapping in the audience!)

I might be seeing the show in Napa, CA on Dec 10th. I'm finally making the pilgrimage to Northern CA. Should be a hoot seeing Grisman in his territory.

During the show on the 11th, the "F"style that Grisman played was an early
Monteleone Mandola. The mandolin was the 2-point Giacomal.

They will be performing here at the community college, in February. I'll be there.
