Hi I have Finale: Songwriter which makes guitar tabs and bass tabs and mandolin notes but it doesn't make mandolin tablature. I was wondering if there was any programs out there that would let me make mandolin tabs. Thanks!

Tabledit does mando tab.

Perhaps the full version of TablEdit (http://www.tabledit.com/). If you mean you write the notes in place. If you mean it pulls the notes from a cd or mp3 and writes the tab... no idea.
I like TablEdit from using it from Mandozine.com for so many years (thanks John Baxter).

G7 from Sibelius, which comes with a marginally useful optical character reading application that can convert from sheet music. Caveat: unless you are prepared to spend some serious time learning the application(s), I wouldn't bother.

Arcane: G7 from Sibelius, which comes with a marginally useful optical character reading application that can convert from sheet music.
And G7 is not cheap-ware -- its several hundred dollars (US) if I recall when I looked into it once.

So I don't suppose that there's a cheaper or freeware version of tab writing for mandolin?

Melody Assistant can make mando tabs. I haven't used the function but it looks straightforward enough. Cost is $US25 and there is a free trial version available.

Yup, TablEdit. Easy to use, easy to copy and paste repeating phrases, cheap "band in a box" capability.

Yup. Tabledit. Easy to build an entire bluegrss orchestra to back yourself up, by exporting the tab to a MIDI file. Easy Cut-and-paste for repeating passages. The MIDI samples are a bit tinny (except the banjo sound, why....is...it...always....about...banjos.....), but the tempo can be adjusted to any speed, and measures scaled to different note values.
If you are industrious you can manually transcribe other tabs into TablEdit and listen to them to get an idea of how people think mandolin.
HEY! My first post showed up....I thought I had navigated away, forgetting to post. Sorry for the repeatishness.

NP. I really like TabEdit. I downloaded the viewer since I found some amazing sites with tabs for this program. I think I'll just save up for it. Now I was also wondering if anyone knew if Finale was able to make tabs for mandolin. Since I already own the program and all.

I've been using Guitar Pro 5. Easy to use and you can use their Real Sound Engine so it sounds somewhat like a mando; not computer beeps. I think it's like $60 or something.

I use full Finale, though it is not cheap. You could have someone who is a student get id for you, considerably cheaper that way.

Finale does make mandolin tab. I scan sheet music in or import it from and xml file and then make a mandolin staff, then just drag and drop into it. Not to hard once you get the hang of it, may not be exact but close enough to learn. Let me know if you need more details.

Kent do you use Finale Songwriter? People keep telling me that Songwriter does this.

No Finale 2008, did use Allegro so I know it will work, as someone said find a college student or teacher and have them get it for you to save a little cost. If you know music then the other programs will do what you need, I am having to go about it the easiest for me since I don't read music. My stuff is not exact and key changes and four part music gives me another hurdle. What it does is give me a starting point for the melody. What I can recommend is take the time to learn standard notation instead of time transposing to tab you wont be disappointed!
