I started a thread in the BG section a while back and we ended up discussing this book/CD, but I wanted to give this book its own thread:
1) to expose folks to a great product, and
2) to hopefully help out Butch a bit.

I wish I'd have gotten this book two years ago when I started playing mandolin. This book has lots of great old tunes that are very approachable, and yet there are many that are going to be very challenging (particularly the Bill Monroe stuff). I like the fact that the songs are played slowly, then up to speed, and then there's a rhythm track to jam along with.

Just wanted to recommend a great resource if you're looking for a good book/CD to work through. I'm sure I'll be spending the next several months working my way through this book.

Nice work on this one, Butch!

I agree wholeheartedly about how great this CD/book package is. I just wish I could find mine! :( I bought this a few years ago, and it was a great inspiration to my mandolin playing. Various genres of music and styles of mandolin are explored, all with great results. Even if you don't play mandolin, it's worth it just to buy the CD. A lot of the songs on the CD are songs released on some of Butch's albums. Very good stuff, I'm going to have to order another copy!

I also have and highly recommend this book and 2 CD set. I've had it for a few years and have learned many of the tunes. I also find myself going back to it for new challenges and to refresh my memory. Butch did a great job with the book and his playing on the CD's is stellar and something we should all try to emulate. He plays so cleanly and with such great tone. It's well worth owning and re-visiting often.

Excellent book & cd, got me started down the Monroe path with Methodist Preacher and Kentucky Mandolin (funny on the cd where he plays the Ky Mando 3rd variation and says "that sounds like little Davy Grisman" or some such line).

It's a great concept. I love Flinner's Jam book and CD set. Having backing tracks to jam to is very helpful.

Where did you get Butch's book/cd set? I'd like to get my hands on this one. I have two of his instructional DVDs and they are very good. I would expect this one to be good too. (doesn't hurt to help out the Baldissari family also ;) )

I got mine from Amazon.com. Since it was new I figured I was still helping out Butch in some way with the purchase. I tried to buy it from FQMS but they were out of stock.

I found it at the Pickin' Parlor in Arvada CO. They had a bunch of Butch's stuff. I love the fiddle tune book and highly recommend it!!

Butch's companion book with 2 cds is Butch Baldassari's Mandolin Tunes for Practice and Repertoire and is excellent. They are both offered by Homespun Tapes.

Link to Homespun (http://www.homespuntapes.com/shop/product.aspx?ID=1305).

Butch's company refers you to there.

Out of the piles of instructional material I own, Butch's 30 Tunes & the Fiddle Fake Book are the two I've used the most. For learning fiddle tunes, these two are the best, imo.

I think I am going to have to order the practice an repetoire book! It is distributed by Hal Leonard so you should be able to order it from just about anywhere if you can't find it in stock.
