OK, I'm going to throw out one more ball to kick around before decision time. Very helpful input on the new vs. old Collings, thanks folks. I've been playing an Eastman F while I get up to speed (coming from guitar). I play mostly bluegrass, some old time, and a wee bit of celtic. Leaving aside, as much as possible, the "scroll" issue (which is something I'll have to confront personally), what are your thoughts and experiences between an MT2 and an MF? Can comfortably go with either, financially.

It goes like this

MT2 Varnish > MF > MT2

At least in my experience. The varnish really seems to improve the treble tone, making it "rounder" (hard to describe but you know it when you hear it) and the chop crisper. I'd go with the Varnish A given the same $$$.

However, there's individual variation to consider. I've played instruments in each of the 3 models which beat other examples in each model. Buying one you can play is always best.
