I'll expand this out a bit to the entire DC/Baltimore area. Looking for who you think would do the best set-up in the DC/Baltimore Metro area.

Try Appalacian bluegrass in Catonsville. Right off the Baltimore beltway.

I had a repair done at Appalachian Bluegrass. They did a good job, but it took twice as long as they originally told me it would...I really like the store/staff, but if you choose to go that wrought, take their stated time frame with a grain of salt. That said, they are probably your best bet in the area. There may be some independents that I'm not aware of, but the Baltimore/Washington area isn't exactly a hotbed of luthiery (which is kind of curious considering that we have a pretty good bluegrass scene).

Yeah, that's what I thought too....

You can try Vern Bryant in Springfield, VA -- 703-451-4975. Vern is a great guy, long time bluegrass picker, and he also makes mandolins. He did some work for me in an amazingly short time.

Thanks Alan....apparently Vern is fairly well known in these parts just not by me. He built mandolins for Orrin Star and Emory Lester as well as being an authorized Martin repairman.

I also came across Marty Fair (http://fairbuilt.com) who is in Purcellville.

I've been told that Appalachian Bluegrass charges $40 for a simple string change. Now, this is hear-say, but the person who told me was certainly in a position to know. I'd be sure to get a binding quote before heading out there for any extensive set-up.

DLang...York's a couple+ hours drive for me, which is a bit further than I'd like to travel for a set-up.

Thanks for the heads up Rabbi!

I think I'm going to stick with either Vern or Marty.....

For anyone interested...Marty lists his charges as $50-$75 for a set-up which seems pretty reasonable to me.

I had some work done by Picker's Supply down in Fredericksburg but I think their mandolin guy has changed. Can't hurt to give them a call.

Thanks Tim...I don't know why I hadn't thought of Picker's. I remember when Bran started that store.
