Hey folks,

I'm excited to announce the first of a hopefully ongoing music event in Oakland: a roda de choro (choro jam) at L'Amyx Tea bar in Oakland.

The roda will be hosted by myself (mandolin, from Grupo Falso Baiano), Brian Moran (7-string guitar, from Grupo Falso Baiano) and Brian Rice (pandeiro, from Mike Marshall's Choro Famoso). It will be an open, informal jam and anyone who plays choro is welcome to bring an instrument and join in!

This will hopefully be an ongoing event - the plan right now is to do it every other Tuesday. We're hoping for a good crowd for our debut next Tuesday, so musicians, come out and play, and non-musicians, come enjoy the music!

The details:

Roda de Choro
Tuesday, September 23
8pm-10pm
L'Amyx Tea Bar
4179 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, CA 94611
Free!

If you have any questions about the roda, please e-mail or call me at (510) 410-4468. L'Amyx Tea Bar can be reached at (510) 594-TEA2.

Hope to see you out there, and please spread the word!

Hi,

I wish I could go but I'm on the East Coast.

BTW: I've got your CD last week and it's really good!

Darn, that's a long commute from Mendocino! How are you doing Jesse?

Yeah and a longer one from Memphis. (sigh) Great that you guys are hosting this. Hope no. 1 was a blast!

Hey Jesse,

Thanks (!) for starting this up. With the three of you hosting it, it's guaranteed to be great.

I'm buzzed, and I'm really looking forward to it. See you next Tuesday.

Too cool -- not sure I'm ready to play in a Choro session, but I am looking forward to visiting you there. (Any chance you'll be at the L'Amyx on Lakeshore as well?)

Hey Jim,

If I'm misreading your question here, then never mind, but this roda is being held at the Lakeshore L'Amyx, not the one on Piedmont Avenue. In which case, the answer to your question to Jesse is 'Yes!'

Hi All,

Just reporting back on last night's roda. It was great! Especially as a first iteration. Jesse, Brian and Brian held the center together playing their usual great, and we just sailed through piece after piece.

Concessions were made to the paper-trained, meaning that, for the most part, tunes were named in advance and people were given time to fish them out.

No concessions were made for tempo, though, and most of the tunes were taken at their higher speeds. That was challenging for the bulk of us there, but rewarding when things clicked.

What'd we play? I don't recall every number, but here's a partial list:

Receita de Samba
Teu Beijo
Doce de Coco
Falta-me Voce
Aguenta Seu Fulgencio (yikes!)
Cadencia
Benzinho
Murmurando
Apanhei-te Cavaquinho
Um Chorinho em aldeia
Assanhado
Sensivel
Noites Cariocas

I'm hoping that this roda becomes a regular fixture on the Oakland music scene.
