I've been wondering this for awhile, and cursory searches turn up very little. Have there ever been groups/ songs with mandolin in "surf"-style music a la Dick Dale, The Ventures or Surfaris? Maybe I'm too young since I grew up in the Punk/ Alternative Rock era. I would think this is a good place to have mandolin given all the tremolo and funky solos. Anyone have some leads on artists or even some mando tab for the guitar stuff?
Thanks,
T

Listen to Bruce Harvie's Mangler of Bluegrass (http://www.radiofreeolga.com/RadioFreeOlga/Mangler_of_Bluegrass.html). #Some great electric Monroe Surf Music. #Fer sure, dude.

Jamie

EDIT: It's free to download and not exclusively Surf music.

I know this has been posted before: Stoneman Youtube Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DWbIEyfyMY) Does that qualify?

Hopefully you didn't miss the video link in this (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=12;t=39860;hl=surf) thread. We have a member with surf mandolin experience in this (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=12;t=41809;hl=surf+and+musi c) thread. It would appear that most of us are surf mandolin hodads.

I was in a group (www.mandolirium.com) that did a lot of that stuff. "Pipeline" and "Apache" were two of the numbers that were in our regular repetoire. We also did "Miserlou" but in a different style until the last time through, when we did it "Dick Dale style". Surf music works great on mandolin! Check out Mike Audridge's version of "Walk Don't Run" with a killer solo by Doyle Lawson.

there WILL be surf Mando played

since Bruce Brown will be present
i'm thinking of working up a mando version of the Sandals "Theme From Endless Summer"

Not mandolin, but snchin (Okinawan shamisen)... there's a track ("The James Bond Theme") by The Surf Champlers (actually one guy) on The Rough Guide To The Music Of Japan.

There was a track of the Champlers on a tape of Oki stuff that guitarist Henry Kaiser sent me years ago. A really terrific version of the trad. Oki tune "Toshin Doi" ("A Ship is Coming") with surf and seagull sound effects added in to the garage/surf arrangment. A really great track!

But wait! A quick Google search has produced both those tracks and two others here! (http://www.last.fm/music/The+Surf+Champlers)

Ouch -- that Stoneman vid hurt my ears! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
But the Surf Champlers samples were pretty cool, IMHO.

Then there is, of course, my surf guitar version of Mike Compton's Big Indian Blues:

GPMH,

If you do end up working out a "Theme From Endless Summer" version for the mando, I would be very interested in getting the notation or tab for that. I've noodled around a bit w/ that and have the VERY basic melody down, but I'm not very good at figuring things out by ear.

Have fun at the party in Oct. It sounds like a blast!

IIRC, Dick Dale's guitar technique is inspired in part by his lebanese uncle's oud technique. Miserlou works great on mandolin. Although I do have to use a pick-up to be audible over the drums. I can see a lot of Dick Dale's material translating well to Mandolin. Amusingly, I just found out his uncle played for belly dancers, which is what I'm now doing!http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

"('Mangler of Bluegrass') is free to download and not exclusively Surf music. "

Here's (http://www.radiofreeolga.com/RadioFreeOlga/Monroe.html) a link to "Come Hither to Go Yonder" done surf style....

I'm in the process of doing a whole CD of fiddle tunes done surf-style....
Stay tuned...

DUDE! Thanks for the links. I especially liked the Stoneman video, kind of like you would hear on "Summer Beach Party". Really cool stuff. I'll be interested in the fiddle tunes turned surf when it comes out. I guess it's "Gremmie Out of Control" on the mandolin from here... # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Done.

I hope Master Compton will approve. #He's a favorite picker of mine.
