View Full Version : Thoughts on this 1924 gibson a-jr snakehead?

I am trying to talk myself into a Gibson A-jr to compliment my 1936 Kalamazoo KM-21.

While waiting for one to appear on the big auction site I noticed this one: http://www.folkwaymusic.com/instruments/gibson.html

I am looking for advice.

While both the instrument and myself are located in Canada I am unable to view it personally (due to distance). Therefore, based on the description and photos I am looking for advice. Does it look like a proper, original example and (equally important) is it priced accordingly?

Many thanks and best regards

Well, I said if I saw one for that price I'd buy it. It's everything I have not to.

Just want to confirm - by your comments I take it that this instrument appears to be correct and/or well priced?

I have a '24 Jr that I really love. Mine is a little cleaner (little play wear) and has all of it's original parts, but I paid a bit more for it. If I were you I'd jump on it.

It looks right to me.

Looks good to me. #I have a 1921/22 paddlehead A-jr, which is (much) more beaten up than that one and which I'm very happy with. #Snakeheads are more desirable and this one looks in good shape. #There is a school of thought that says that Ajr models tend to sound better, or at least more consistently good, than the fancier A models. #That may or may not be so, but for a fancier snakehead you'd expect to pay much more than that. #Go for it.

Is that a maple back? Mine also has a maple back, I'm curious now how many maple-backed A-jr's are out there.

That is a handsome mandolin and it does appear to have a maple back. The price is respectable.

I took delivery of a 1924 Gibson A-Jr. snakehead last Thursday. #Great mandolin! #Very nice tone. #Mine has both the serial number and factory order number as well dating it to 1924. #I paid $850 for mine with an older chipboard case. #I had a vintage hardshell case that is from that time period, so the chipboard case is sitting empty. #My 1924 A-Jr. has an adjustable bridge, and is missing the original pickguard. #That seems to be a reasonable price. #I really like the tone of this A-Jr. #The back on my A-Jr. is not as pretty as the back on the one at Folkway, but it does have the tone! #Let us know what you decide!

I called to buy that one on Tuesday but alas, it had been sold a few hours earlier.
I just missed it.
