hey...gettin my 1st mando in a couple of days...just wonderin whats the diffrence in sound n feel?
i love the sound of a bowlback, but really hard for me to hold. like anything, takes getting used to. my favorite sound is an old vega cylinder back, and i understand, though haven't tried one, that rigel is making something comparable.

Well... it all depends on what "the best sound" is to your ears.
I have played bowlbacks (only) just about all my life and don't find holding one to be a problem; time and experimentation will answer all related questions.
As to the original question: Why... get one of each! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Enjoy whatever mando you get!

I've recently lost some weight, but for the longest time, my belly was too big to play a taterbug. It was like putting two of them back to back! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I am also round at the midriff, but have found a way to tuck the bowlback under my arm. I can even play standing, tho prefer to play sitting with a footrest.

Have any pictures? #I'd be interested in seeing that position. #I have a couple of students that play taterbugs, and I'm just not that practiced at holding them. #Any info would be helpful!

Hi I have always played a bowlback and the best way to hold it on your lap is to get a piece of leather , chamous hope thats the right spelling just place it on your lap and it will hold the mandolin. Steven http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

I have alternately used the chamois leather and that spongy rubbery stuff that people use to line shelves or drawers with. It seems to work even better but I do not keep it any where near the instrument when I am storing it.
