You may have heard about The Tonerite for mandolins I have been helping develop in another thread. The device is modeled after the successful Tonerite violin models, which is used to decrease the Playing-In(de-damping) phenomenon. When placed on the instrument and plugged in, the Tonerite gently vibrates the strings, as well as the top and back plates. The results are a more open, warm, resonant tone. The prototype for mandolins is now ready, and I'm looking for a few builders to test it out. If interested please contact me for more information.

I am happy to report the Tonerite for mandolins is now ready for production. After testing and upgrading the product, we've come up with an enhanced model which includes an in-line power switch, and a virtually silent operation. Several luthiers have weighed in on the positive effectiveness of using the Tonerite to improve tone and responsiveness, especially on instruments that were "asleep", including Michael Lewis and Martin Brunkella.
The beauty of this "dedamping" tool is it's portable and can be used at random or continuously to keep the mandolin alive and responsive. Especially helpful on the opening up process of new instruments.

I have tried out the mandolin Tonerite. It definitely works!!
I have two very fine sounding mandolins but they can lose tone, volume,
and response if they are not played for a few days. I can't possibly play both of them enough to keep them really full-sounding and responsive from the get-go so the first 20 minutes or so of playing time is waking up time for them.
I purposely left one of my mandolins in the case for a week and when I played it again, it sounded thinner and not a thing like itself when it is warmed up. Yeah, mandolins really DO go to sleep as so many you know!! I used the Tonerite on it overnight and the full, woody tone, the volume, and the response were all back again. I've used the Tonerite several times since and it makes a difference in a few hours, but even more of a difference for about 8 to 10 hours.
I'm really impressed with this product

Hi Teri,
Are these available now? Where can they be purchased and what is the cost. Also, would there be any harm done to a mando if it was always left on when not playing the mando?

Mark, yes it is OK to leave the Tonerite on the mandolin at all times or when needed. It is made of soft rubber and will not cause any damage. In fact the inventor of the violin/cello models leaves his on his cello at all times, so it's ready and warmed up to play.I am taking orders for mandolin model now ( they are now yet listed on the Tonerite site) but available now through me
(Music Tree), please contact me directly and I will send you pricing & more info ( don't know if it's cool to do that here, however I will put an add in the classified)
