Dear NG,

Spending vacation with mandolin in hand, I notice that if I ease the grip on the pick, and use less attack when noting, I can go fairly fast! I also note that if I want volume, I need to be bolder on the attack and hang onto the pick (or loose it).

So, for learning, should I work on the slow and bold or fast and timid?

Just trying to get better - ha.

i like to work on both. i start with getting the notes right, then build speed gradually, then i can change the volume at will.

Big Mon had this advice about learning/plaing/practicing. "Play it so that every note is clear and distinct". That being said, I would think that slow and bold would be easier than fast and timid. It would take a whole lot more practice and control to make the notes clear and distinct with a feeble pick stroke. I have heard many good players and teachers say that speed will come all on its own, but I haven't heard too many say that clarity and good tone will happen automatically.

Yep, work on noting cleanly, speed will take care of itself, though it is fun just to push your limits from time to time. Whatever ya do, if there's a smile on yer face then yer doin' it right.
