I brought this up in the CBOM area:
I'm thinking of having an octave mandolin (GGDDAAEE) built with a resonator akin to a dobro, but for picking. I've seen Tut Tayloyr's "Widow's Demise" on the web, but I'm thinking of something a little more affordable! I'm up to my brainstorming again, talking with the local luthier about creating such a beastie. What might pros and cons be for such? Suggestions, ideas, comments welcome.

You could go buy a cheap import reso guitar, plug and re drill the headstock, modify the tail piece for 2 extra strings, and make a new nut and saddle. Can you spell A F O R D A B L E ? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

It's been done, more than a time-r-two!

I think Elderly prolly has a converted archtop, or more, take about an hour to convert... with cut plugs, and super glue... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

wow... Mandocello/ex-baritone acoustic.. why the hell did I think of it!? Oh yeah! I remember! I have 3 dreadnaught bodies, and some loose mahogany.. hmmm.. I will call it FAT-TOP.
