Does any body out there actually name their mando? ( I call my $150.00 Hyburn "Buddy".) People name their cars "Betsy" and such. Why not their mandos? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

The old Rover A was called "mule" but I didnt realize it till I sold it...LOL! The new one is yet unnamed...

Edit: One of my buddies said my new mando looks like I should be wearing a cape and standing in a castle playing it (Phantom of the Opry) so I think I'll call it Dracula http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I don't really have a nickname for it my friend calls his guitar Bertha or Betsy can't remeber which (this is a Gibson Gothic SG) http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif I do refer to my mandolin as my baby/child but that is pretty common.

My daughter named hers Jesseronnierickysamandy Lynn after some of her mandolin heroes, although
it used to be Jesserhondajakealynn. A Bit of a mouthful either way.

The bigger question is "who doesn't have a name for their mandolin"? We all seem to have this strange need to name that which we love. Having said that, I am going back to bed with "Marilyn William Monroe", "the Brunette", and "road kill"..... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Gee willikers! That's more responses than I anticipated. I expected to be barred from the message board for bringing up too silly a topic for the sophisticated mandolinists to appreciate. But that's what I do best. Anyway, I found it interesting one of you keeps calling your intruments by the same name. That's why I named my mando Buddy. All of my pet turtles were named Buddy. Or Mrs. Buddy, if one was a girl. All my hamsters have been named Pookie. And so forth.

Yep, pretty much name them all.
Weber Aspen II - "Webie"
1976 Alvarez - "Gospel"
1927 Regal Roundback - "Tater"
Banjolin - "Bando"

All the guitars have names too but we won't go there right now.

My Alvarez is Al, of course. The Gibson 1913 is Geezer and the Breedlove Cascade is Mo. He is called Mo because he is named after the bar-b-que place down the street called "Mo betta Barbeque" because he is my Mo betta mando! Geezer just named himself. My first mando, a Weber Y2K was call Skippy. I was thinking about having my Breedlove adjusted and said, "well, I can always plan Skippy the backup mando for a few days". It just came out, and that was his name. My 150 year old Salzar fiddle is named Sally Goodin. (She is a good ''un. The other fiddle has yet to tell me the name, but I think it is a boy.

Mine's Jessica, because I did an inlay of Jessica Rabbit on the headstock, and dyed the mando burgandy to match her dress, because the world just did not need me to build yet another brown burst mando with yet another standard issue inlay on the headstock.
I also find if I name my truck, and favorite instruments, I tend to take better care of them. It's easier for me to become attached enough to change the oil on the truck or not leave the instrument in dumb places if I start thinking of them as more than garden variety tools.

I started a thread on this same subject, but decided to move my comments here.

I think Ellie hit the nail right on the head!..
Naming your instrument helps a musician pull out the personality of the instrument. I also think that not only do we treat our instruments better when we name them, but they treat us better as well. I honestly believe that.

I find it interesting that a number of us musicians derive the names from the instrument itself. Either a physical attribute, how she plays or she just tells us. I also firmly believe instruments, especially wooden ones have a female spirit. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
My instruments:
The school's tuba I played through highschool: Bernice (don't know why, it just fit, I guess she told me.)
My first guitar: Epi (too easy, I hadn't learned to listen to her yet)
First guitar I bought for my kids to play with: Stella from being a Harmony Stella. (not too original either, but Stella fits on a spiritual level, some how) She is petite and needs to be held gentle like, not man handled or she clams up. She has a voice all her own and I still play her. If I don't she gets jealous and whines. (hear that? I'd better pick her up soon.)
My latest guitar: Yamaha flat-top: Genie from the fact my dad and I share a common middle name. It was a gift from him when I was down on my luck and Epi and Stella were both in need of repair. The first new wood in a long time. It was the only female variant I could think of. It didn't hurt that when I was 13 I was in LOVE with Barbara Eden.

No I haven't mandoed yet, but hope to soon. I'll let her tell me her name, I won't force it. Sounds like it could take a year for her to 'open up' (I think that's the correct usage), so I'll be patient. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif

I just found out that the model 23 Brentrup I got for Christmas had been dubbed "The Rat" by its maker. Evidently it had been taken so many places for demo, it had its share of war wounds, most of which were polished out before it left Hans' shop and found it's way under the Christmas tree in very good shape. But I can't get myself to call it the Rat -- I'm thinking of Honeypot.

My own home-built #1 is Marvin, named for Marvin the Martian who appears in the peghead inlay. Now if anything deserves to be called a rat, that one does. Looks like the scroll was carved by rat teeth.

One of my earliest exposures to the mandolin was at my step-grandmother's (the mother of my father's wife) house. Her grandfather played the mandolin (bowl back) and was religated to playing in the bathroom. So, maybe there is a hidden meaning to the pseudonym "mandojohn" - ha.

Wow. #Many interesting responses.

I haven't named my mandolin. #I don't know if I will. #these things happen accidentally or not at all. #My SCGC guitar is called "Red" or "Ol' Red" (despite the fact that it's only 4 and a half) or "Big Red." #And I'm not the one who uses the names. #My buddy, Ken, who plays Red as much as I do calls it by name way more than I do.

FWIW, I call his Gilchrist Model 5 "Gill," and he's got a recent Martin D-41 or -42 named "Tammy Faye" because it's just got so much ornamentation on it. #Another friend of his even put false eyelashes on the headstock.

My Weber mandola gets called "Dola" a lot. #Not sure if that's a name though.

I guess I could call my mandolin "Rose" because the name doesn't make a difference in how it sounds; as Shakespeare wrote, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." #You know, the more I think about it the better I like that. #It's a name which declares names are mere labels. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif

I'm really trying to think of something funny to say here, but can't. I love dogs, but, that is just "WRONG". Now if a cat had used it for a scratching post, I'd be all over it.

I called my Grand Artist "BABY" for the three years leading up to it being in my hot little hands. Then when I got it, it became 'my nice mando'...Kerryps I don't know why that happened either.....

This thread may already have run its course, but I'm new here, so . . . .

My Mid-Mo was always "Moe," but no way am I naming my Eastman "Larry" or "Curly."

I also quickly dispensed with Linda (Eastman (McCartney)) since I wasn't really a big fan anyway and figured my wife wouldn't like it much.

I think I'm settling on Dutchess, in honor of a legendary family dog. In fact, following on some of what I've seen in this thread, I may have an inlay put in to go with the name. Think I'll see if the really "sticks" first, though.

I have only named one of my mandolins, a '93 Flatiron A5 Artist. While researching my MacQueen (linked with Clan Chattan) ancestors, I found a lass named "Chattie", which seemed a very appropriate name for this particular instrument.

I have never thought about naming my mandolin until this thread. I think I'll name it POC. It's a Morgan Monroe. Next week I'll be buying a Collings MT Ivoroid. I'll have to name it Maytag because like the guy with the bathroom remodel it was either a Collings mandolin or a Maytag fridge.:O

Unless you crafted the instrument with your own hands you should be satisfied with the manufacturer's title/serial number. If you have nicknames for your instruments, you probably have more instruments than you need.

A lot of the Silver Angels have names written inside them. Mine is named Serenella. There is also a paragraph written on the top between the tone bars, but I can't see well enough to read it. Especially mirror script by way of an inspection mirror.

Alot of the mandolins that I have built were done to honor family or friends for whatever reason. They all get serial numbers, but they also get names. Those built to be sold, simply get serial numbers. Ironically, my favorite player is number one, named for my mother, Vernadeen, who used to travel with her sister to play and sing gospel music. She's 84 and still going strong. The mandolin is very rustic and antique looking. It's nickname is "Old Battle Axe". All in good fun, of course.

i tried to artificially give my axe a name- sunny, as the theme of inlays, tailpiece, etc.. is all the sun! but, it felt fake and forced. periodically have refered to her as "sweetness" (generally after some particulalarly sweet tremolo), but generally just refer to her as "my axe"- hey just noticed that this was what i sued in the first sentence of this post. so i guess that is as close to a nickname as i get!

Our Michael Kelly Firefly is known as "Smoky." #Our HD-28V is called "Buzz," a name that has more to do with our playing prowess than the instrument. #Our new Lebeda doesn't have name, yet - Me 'n Mrs. Jones are open to suggestions.

As an addendum to Doug Edwards' post from earlier: #Nearly all of Ken Ratcliff's custom Silver Angel mandolins have been named by him. #I sell Silver Angel Tee-Shirts and hats (with Ken's blessings and support), and ask each buyer what the names on their mandolins are. #Some of the names found on Silver Angel Mandolins include:

Gabriella
Oliva (my own)
Serenella (Doug Edwards)
Carolina #(Dano's)
Lida
Cynthia Jane
Abril Angelina (Laura Ratcliff #33 - Angelfire's)
Yana
Selene
Carmelita
Maya
Tamara

Many of these owners have also sent me photos of their Angels. #I'm thinking of starting a website just for those! #

Cheers! #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Meet "Cindy Lew", a Lewis mando that reminded me of that dirty blonde Cindy Crawford look with a cute dimple. She sleeps in a pink Calton.

Interesting that a friend who writes songs that our band sometimes does had a random reference to the name Cindy Lou.

I call my first mandolin ,, old spotted leopard or dirty dog, because it was manufacture sort of crudely, and the stains didnt work too well , sort of spotted and ran, from a distance it looks like a spotted leopard, but otherwise pretty crude like a worn out dog, but it sounds pretty good, Dennis in Yuma Arizona

Now, "more than my house can hold"...that I get.

B) As a proper homage, my mid-mo is now officially named "Gene"
