View Full Version : OM Resonator?
So, has anyone here known of an octave mandolin (GGDDAAEE) built with a resonator akin to a dobro, but for picking? I'm up to my brainstorming again, talking with the local luthier about creating such a beastie. What might pros and cons be for such?
Pro: cool, very cool
Con: it would be yours, not mine
Go for it!
Well, there are certainly resophonic tenor guitars that are tuneable an octave below mandolin with proper strings. But the strings are four singles, not double courses. The cones on resophonics tend to be a bit fragile. I'd worry that a standard cone couldn't take the tension of 8 strings. But hopefully, anyone who would attempt building such a thing would know a lot more than I do.
The only one I've ever seen was a custom by Mark Taylor of Crafters of Tennesee. Very elaborate and fancy, it was on sale at Elderly and Ebay for awhile. I don't know if it sold but it can be done. See pictures at:Crafters (http://www.crafterstn.com/crafters/frame.htm)
Click on "Custom" on the left and then scroll down to "Spider Mandolin".
I just picked up a National tenor guitar that is a vert cool instrument. I know Dan B. has one too; I believe he got rid of a tenor banjo when he got his.
Borrowed this pic from Crafters; couldn't resist.
Stuart Wailing might make you one I know he does custom orders he is on the resonator eycandy page it is the one that looks like a bluses guitar resonator. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I highly recommend Stuart Wailing. I have one of his resonater mandolins and have been playing some Irish sessions with it.
It works great as it really cuts through all thoses fiddles. Very well made at a reasonable price.
Thanks for the ideas so far. I'm also taking the topic to the builder/repairs section. I'll take a look at Stuart Wailing's stuff, thanks.
You might contact Steve Evans at Beltona Resonator Instruments. He has built me years ago one of the nicest Style 4 Tri-cone guitar and I have played once on his resonator mandolin which I remember as a killer instrument. Since he does everything on demand, he would probably built any kind of OM, although it looks like he's really into ukes at the time. www.beltona.net # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
