I am leaving tonight on a road trip to Canada and need some reading material. I would like to read something about Bill Monroe or possibly something about the history of Bluegrass/Appalachian music. Any suggestions?

"The Big Book of Bluegrass" is a good one on many different artists but I don't know if it is still in print.

How about "Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone?" about the Carter Family. Really outstanding...

Can't You Hear Me Calling by Richard Smith - a fair bio of Bill Monroe that came out a couple years ago.

Bluegrass Breakdown by Robert Cantwell - on the history of BG music, written about 20 years ago, recently reissued in paperback. On the scholarly side.

I have to 2nd "Can't You Hear Me Callin".....Just finished it a week or so ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.....I think it's probably the most complete and honest biography you will find on Bill Monroe.....Got mine at Barnes & Noble.

"can you hear me calling" and "will you miss me when I'm gone" are both excellent books.
