I am soliciting advice from the resident experts. I have a "beater" washburn that I purchased new probably back in 94 or so. In a nutshell, I really hate to play the thing. It sounds so thin and tinny that it drives me crazy. It never stays in tune and a couple of the machines Im pretty sure are possessed. I cant part with it because it is paid for and I wont mind if it falls in the campfire but I would like it to be a more player friendly and better sounding mandolin. Any chance that I can get better sound out of it? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Recently I tuned it E B F# C# blues style and love the sound good luck http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Byrd,
You could change the tuners, and bridge and maybe get better performance out of it. You may also try different strings for a better tone, but, they are what they are. Don't expect huge tonal changes.
