Back when I lived in Berkeley (1980 - 1985) The Tim Ware group was a real force in what Darol Anger coined "New Acoustic Music". I used to go to see them at the Freight and Salvage, and was always amazed at the inventiveness of Tim on mandolin and his group. I moved away and lost track. I heard that his guitarist, Bob Alekno (a super nice guy) had died in a car wreck. I did a search of the Mandolincafe, and I don't think any threads came up. I just wanted to see if anyone remembered this remarkable group.

Oh yeah....

I remember them well, and Bob was a good friend....
Man, was that a tragedy... # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

I used to go see them all the time in the Berkeley area, but it seems like that was in the 70's?
'77-'79 or so?

It's all a fog... #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Did their stuff make it to CD??

Wasn't there one Tim Ware album, "Shelter from the Norm"?

There were two. Click on the link for them at the wiki page I put in the original post. You can download them for free.

Great player, great band. When I started out playing mandolin in the mid 90ies I had a cassette copy of the first Tim Ware album and it was a huge influence on me. Given the rarity of the album and the fact that I am living in Austria, I find it quite amazing that I was exposed to this music. How many copies of that album are in circulation outside of the US? Two, maybe three?

Yeah, one of my favourite all-time album titles. The other one on Kaleidoscope is self-titled. It's the stronger of the two, imo, but they're both great records. I learned "Boss de Bomba" and "On The Wing & Under The Weather", from the first album. Totally original mandolin music. The Tim Ware Group is one of the obsucre gems of the mandolin world.

One of my favorite groups and a strong influence when I was starting out on mandolin. I met Bob sometime in the late 70's when he was back home here in Illinois, a super nice guy. Yeah, the group and Bob are definitely remembered.

As far as I know, Tim is still making music in his studio, but I haven't seen any performances from him in a long, long time. I think he does some composition for films and TV.

He is much sought-after web designer, and he has done work for a lot of great players and music sites, including Mike Marshall and the Santa Cruz Guitar Company:

He is also one of the world's biggest enthusiasts for the novel of reclusive, enigmatic author Thomas Pynchon:

Got both albums and still enjoy listening to them ! Read an interview recently from the guy but cannot remember where ... If I do, I'll let you know or try to post a link to it http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
