View Full Version : Collings MF
Hello to everyone. Got my MF yesterday from Greg Boyd and would like to give my opinion on this mando. The look of this mando to my surprise is very unique and different, very pleasing and simple. I was not sure I would like it pryer to ordering but can say that now I am very pleased with my choice. The sound, once you get the feel of this mando and it did take me a few hours to adjust to how to best attack this MF, WOW is all I need to say. It's all the things I heard from this great forum. There is tonnes of tone and nuance to be found just by changing your attack of the right hand, different picks also change what can be heard and this opens up another palette of tones. I have been playing this MF for about seven hours overall now and can hear tone maturing already. That's Amazing. I realize that this change is also due to my better feel for this mando. The base tone is very powerfull and sustained for a new mando, very woody and balanced, the treble side is in balanced with this also but still not yet fully open to that bell like sound that we all love. Maybe some small minor adjustments of bridge height and more playing time will bring this about. This mando also sounds great every were I play it in my home. Different location gives you more choices of tone charecter. I own and operate a recording studio and I have learnt to seek these accoustic changes which realy changes from room to room. Overall I am very very happy with my decision on the MF and would like to thank Greg Boyd for his expert assistance and smooth transaction. Super great guy and knows his stuff, would recommend to anyone. Again thanks to all here who replyed to my questions, thank you Greg Boyd, and Collings keep them comming, stunning build by the way. I will report back when I feel this MF has moved foward again, the way its going now it will be sooner then later. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Reg,
Congradulations! I tried and was surprised at how good the MF was. I like the simple but elegant look of the instrument as well as the sound and playablility. I just wish I could swing enough cash to secure one of these.

Congrats on the MF. I've had mine for about a week and am still waiting to catch my breath. I play better and have much more confidence with this baby. My only complaint is that I have to put it down to eat. They should really do something about this.
Did you believe you would get so much sound for that price? I thought I would have to spend at least 7-8 grand too get the sound I wanted.
The thing that makes it realy happen for me is the way this mando react to the way you attack the strings which gives you a full palette of different tones. I am not an expert on the different types of mando out there and I'm sure nowdays there are plenty of great sounding mando's by great builders, but yes for the price in my humble opinion the Collings MF is a great value. This MF mando will record execptionaly well using ribon microphones which will pick up the smallest amount of attack and capture that fine and deep mando sound. Still like the way it looks.

The new MT and MF models from Collings have so many great qualities and they are, in my opinion, an excellent value.
It seems that many dealers have now filled their back orders, and these models are finaly in their showrooms for more that a day or two. So, I think that more and more, players will now have a chance to discover for themselves how great these instruments really are.

http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif #301 MF! In the shop less than a week. I'll consider myself lucky to have made the trip yesterday. The matte finish saves me the time of sweating on the gloss and cloudin up anyway. This thing plays like buttah.
