Grey Fox Mando Meet and Greet. This is Buskin' Rabbi's idea and after very little discussion we agree that its a great one. How about 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm on friday at the D'Addario/Collings tent. Its hard to pick a time because we want to get out and see some music too. We will close the store at 7:00 pm and the all the cafe members can get in to meet, sample each others mando family stuff and get out in time to watch Grisman's show at 8:50. We will be there and I hope lots of members show up. Lets see what you've got.

I'll try to stop by, but Sparrow Quartet plays Friday at 7:30...

I will try to make it. Each time I try to meet up there, there is too much going on and it's hard to keep a specific time open. Sparrow Quartet is too soft for me.

It's hard to pick a time at and event like Grey Fox. We thought about doing the Meet and Greet on thursday, but too many people are either in transit or busy setting up camp or just checking out the new festival layout. We have to see Grisman and Hot Rize along with a bunch of other artists so we decided on the friday time. We are going to have a very sweet almost new Comins A model mando at the festival, unless it sells first. This is a beautiful instrument with some of the best craftmenship I have seen. I am curious to see what other players think of this mandolin. If you can't make it to the Meet and Greet stop in when you get the chance.

I'm thrilled that someone has been able to run with the idea. I look forward to stopping in and meeting some of the Cafe folks!

I will not be there for the pre festival party. I will roll in on Tuesday and start setting up our stuff and check out the new area. I'm counting the hours and come monday I'll be counting the miles. I would like to see a Grey Fox Mando Maniacs #similar to the one at Merle Fest. We as a group (mando cafe, and mando players in general) should request this for the future as a masters stage event. This would have been a great year for it with Grisman, Bush, Obrien, and all the others that will be playing there. See you when the Festival opens.

As I understand it, Grisman, McCoury and Sarah Jarosz are giving a workshop on Friday at 6PM and Sam Bush is giving one on Saturday at 6PM. Sounds pretty mandomaniacal to me.:)

Hey, guys & gals!
I hope to see some of you there. Maybe I'll bring the prototype F-4 longneck I've been working on, although the proximity to a new Collings might be a problem. Anybody heard about the mandolin workshop? Is Fred Lantz going to be there?
About twenty years ago at Winterhawk there was "Bass in your face" wherein a group of a couple dozen bass players would crash one jam after another which terrified lots of campers. To do a similar thing with mandolins would probably be as annoying as a swarm of mosquitos.
I'll bring along the Gibson goldrush if anyone wants to give it a try.
Saturday night at 11:00- Red Knuckles or Sam Bush? AAAAAAH!
Now off to synchronize the fuel jets on the dual burner Coleman.

Many, many thanks to those who came to the Grey Fox/Mandolin Cafe mando tasting, jammed bit and shared their mandolins. Special thanks to Rich Michaud for the Gilchrist, Nugget, Gibson Victorian and other delectable instruments. Definitely a highlight of the festival for me. It was a hot weekend in more ways than one!

Thank you Dick for having the sponsors agree to host! The surprise gift of the EXP's was a really classy touch by D'Addario. It was great meeting folks and swapping instruments at Dick's booth. #Besides being wonderful to put names to faces, man o man some of those mandos were delicious. #Thanks to all who let me rub some of that mojo onto my hands. #I can't wait to see the pix!!

Here are some pics from the meet and greet. It was big fun and a special thanks to Dick and Tom Wade, also the rabbi and Rich Michaud for bringing some awesome mandolins... although I though they were all great.

We need some names with these faces I can't remember. Also what mandolin you are playing so we can Identify them. This should be Michael and the buskin rabbi with a rigel and a gilchrist. What year is the Gil Rich?

All right ... here is a pic of me and some guy who wanted to take a picture with me.

Actually I made Sam crack up because I asked if he would take a picture with me and then whan he put his arm over my shoulder I asked him "who are you again? and why are you famous?" He burst out laughing just as this pic was snapped and then said "great line"

Fred G
Jul-20-2008, 8:17pm
Right after the above pic Sam did a master workshop. During the workshop he got a vist from a 6ft tall white rabbit...

Fred G
Jul-20-2008, 8:20pm
It was Jerry Douglas in a rabbit mask. Sam wasted no time and immediately started playing "white rabbit" with the word Alice replaced by the word Jerry.

and a little Flamenco dancing all while Sam played on. It was a really good clinic as usual by Sam. He explained a lot about rythm playing and his right hand.

Jul-20-2008, 8:28pm
other than that the festival was a good one for me. I got to meet and play with a whole bunch of really good mando players along with breaking in my new axe. Thursday night I was jamming with a banjo, guitar, bass and one other mando. A little while later 3 mandos showed up (great players from the Ithica area Troy, Phil and http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif) and we jammed fiddle tunes and bluegrass instrumentals for hours. I had another fun session with Perry and Tom C.
over and out,
Fred

one more thing, Sam saw my shirt and mentioned the interview with Bill Graham and was wondering if it was up there yet. Of course I didn't know because I don't take the laptop camping. But I see it is up there...

Hey Brad, do you know if Jake was up at Greyfox? I didn't see him for the first time in a few years. Are you going to AFBA at wind gap in August?

I had a great time meeting everyone. Thanks to Fred for the picture of me with Del. Meeting him and Ronnie and Sam was amazing. Thanks to eveyone for giving me the chance to try all the amazing instruments. Hey Fred looks like I snuck into the first pic of Sam and Jerry too! The White Rabbit episode is something I won't soon forget! I also have some pictures I will try to put up soon.

Fred - thanks for getting these pictures up. I'm the one with the Mowry, and show up for everyone's viewing pleasure in the second photo of the tasting, on the right - incorrectly identified as Steve, but, hey, close enough!

It was a treat to try everyone's mandos - another 2 - 3 hours really settling in with them would have been great, but any time with them was worthwhile. We all got to check out a Gilchrist and Nugget (thanks, Rich), a Mix, Gibson Goldrush and the new Victorian, a Collings, a cedar-top Weber.

I tried hanging in there with Rich and Fred and everyone else, and managed not to crash and burn too much (and sorry to Rich for unintentionally joining him on his first break on Red-haired Boy).

And maybe the gentleman with his friend's no-name attic gem will say hi here. He sure could pick!

Nice to meet everyone and I look forward to another gathering at Grey Fox '09.

Festival mando highlights:
- my first chance to see/hear Sarah Jarosz live - first joining Uncle Earl at the dance tent, then at her second Friday Masters stage event (with Grisman, McCoury and Kim Warner), and her Saturday Masters stage set. She's a terrific picker and singer. Deep River Blues was a real treat.
- Kim Warner of the Greencards. Superb - first time to see/hear him play.
- Ron Thomason - I love Dry Branch, love the stories, but, man, Ron's playing is always top-notch.
- Sam Bush - he might still be playing his Saturday night (Sunday morning) set. Didn't start 'til after midnight, and went to about 2:15 or so. I don't stay up that late ever, but Sam made it easy.

Other highlights: The Steeldrivers, full set(!) at the dance tent(!!) from Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers(!!!), slowly awaking at 4:30 or so one morning by some camping neighbors with a beautiful version of Angel From Montgomery, Red Stick Ramblers, and lots more.

Sorry for the long post, but, hey, Grey Fox only comes once a year. Plus, it capped a great summer vacation that included a long tour of national parks out west with the family, and that trip began with a visit to some other festival out west called Telluride.

Cheers - Dave Gumbart

Playing ALL night, every night at the Irish pubs in East Durham (Irish Arts Week), alongside many of the world's finest Irish musicians, we were vaguely aware of "some other bluegrass festival" taking place nearby. It was interesting once in a while to come across people from "the other festival". One Irish pub in East Durham had a sign saying "Welcome Irish Arts Week; Good luck bluegrass"..... I guess they reserve the right for a wee dig ;) The two events are SO different. Glad you folks had a great time at Grey Fox. We had an amazing time on the other side.

p.s The two groups would rub elbows once in a while at the fantastic Oak Hill Kitchen - an oasis in the midst of a culinary wasteland

sounds like we all need to come to the air conditioned pub on wed. night next year and do the meet and greet http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I had my share of Guinness during greyfox but a few more wouldn't hurt.

Fred - cool picture with Sam! Somewhere, I have a photo of me playing a set of mazurkas with Dáithí Sproule at a pub on Sat night. Just the two of us. I was in heaven.

Actually I believe its not often that the two events overlap like they did this year. I would have loved to see Sam Bush and DG too, but I guess our true colors reveal when one has to make a hard decision.

There was a rumor that a temporary cell tower was brought in for the Grey Fox. We had no cell phone reception at all. Yup - there is more money in BG than there is in Irish Traditional music. That's ok. I can live with that http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Well I wish I knew about this meet & greet but I just joined this forum. I am in Boston MA, West Roxbury to be exact. I had an inexpensive Rogue at the festival; now I have a Michael Kelly & I'm looking for a strap...and learning how to play...but perform as a singer in the streets and subways. Might be interesting to find a jam around here at some point.
