Hi Everyone,
I have a mando with one D string nut slot that is too deep. Can someone tell me how to raise the string without removing the nut and shimming it. It is a bone nut. Thanks.

fill the slot with med super glue, once dry you can file it back fust like bone Don Batten

What's wrong with shimming it? If you can't do that then you need to make a new one. SOMETIMES filling with super glue works, but in my experience it is only a temporaoy fix. It wears down faster than bone and sometimes will push out of the slot in one or two pieces. I think you need a new nut.

The first few nuts I made were crummy and I actually got good at fixing this mistake. I found that it works better to mix some of your bone dust with the superglue before you fill the slot. It seems to be sturdier this way and the string slides in the slot better for tuning. However, be sure to let the glue fully cure before refiling and tightening a string up into it!

I'd make a new nut. A blank is cheap, and if you are contemplating repairing the old nut, making a new one might be just up your alley. If you do try to fill the slot a little, I would use a mix of bone dust and superglue - it sould be a little more like actual bone.
Warning! I know nothing about this stuff but ....
Just last night a friend of mine who does repair work mentioned that adding a little baking soda to the crazy glue makes the glue cure more quickly and suggested that it the resulting fill might be a bit harder and stronger than the glue alone. Sounded pretty inetresting so I thought I'd offer it here. Be aware though that I have no evidence either to suggest whether or not it will work so pleas use at your own risk.
Hope this helps ...

Baking soda(sodium bicarbonate) in my experience works just as well as a filler with superglue as bone dust does. It is also safer to use in it's already usable out of the box condition as opposed to trying to harvest bone dust off of a sander or the like. #However this is still only a temporary fix and will eventually need to be attended to. I would do as Michael Lewis suggests and remove the nut to shim the bottom. This can also be done with superglue and baking soda-glue the bottom, tap lightly in soda, let set, sand level, restring, Viola!!
That is only if you find making a new nut too intimidating.

Well... there are those way cool and WAAAAY expensive 3m UV cure plastics. I dont see that being a thing in the average guys shop.
Too bad they dont make slot filler strips. Sounds like an idea! Imagine precut filler strips in say .020, .030, .040, etc. Just cut the slot to the next size up, glue in a filler, trim, and recut the slot! Sorta like recaps on yer baloney skin maypops (tires). Like I said, too bad that ain't a thing we got.

I found a slight twist to the previously mentioned fixes. File out a v-shape into the offending grove and super glue in a scrap of bone. Now you are slotting fresh bone not bone dust. I have extended the life of a couple of nuts this way without sacrificing tone.
