I have decided to learn how to play bluegrass mando. What are some good bluegrass mandolin method books? I would prefer something aimed at someone who knows how to play alreasy not a beginner's book because I am not a beginner. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

A good place to start might be the Bill Monroe book by Todd Collins. 25 Monroe tunes transcribed by Todd. You can get it through Elderly Instruments. Monroe is the 'father of bluegrass' so you might as well start with the best. It'll give you the flavor of what bluegrass mandolin is all about.

Roland White's book is good. It's available from his website. Nice arangements and styles and comes with a CD with a slow and a faster version of each tune.

I just recently bought the Homespun Sam Bush book with cd. Just started listening to it and it seems to be really well made, with lots of useful commentary from Bush in between the pieces and exercises. The most amazing free source at the moment has to be the massive collection of Tef files available on the Mandozine site - there's enough there to keep you busy for years.

I've liked 'Bluegrass Mandolin' by Jack Tottle. It does start out as a beginners book, but it gets fairly advanced later on.

After looking through all of these reccomended books I found that the best for me would be the Jack Tottle one. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

There is an mp3 file for the Tottle book available free on line. I don't have the location here right now, but someone here can give it to you I bet. Or I can find it and post it.

Butch Baldassari has published transcriptions of a Monroe CD called 16 Gems - it gives a good assortment of transcribed intros and solos for classic material in a variety of keys and tempos. Also available from Elderly.

If you already play then I would go with "Bluegrass up the Neck" by Niles Hokanen (sp?). An excellent book for intermediate players.

I looked at that one it seems like it would be useful for playing in upper positions if you already play bluegrass mando but I think I will get both. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif
