I find that my nut slots seem to collect dirt/oil. When this happens, the strings bind and the instrument won't stay in tune.

Sometimes when tuning, I'll also hear the string sort of pop like it's not feeding through the nut smoothly. This didn't happen when the instrument was new.

The mandolin is a Gibson F5-G, and I string it with J-75 D'Addario's. I don't think these are significantly heavier than what the instrument came with new.

The slots sound rough, they may need a cleanup, with a slotting file.. surely.. ping-ping..

A damp toothbrush, maybe a little Murphy's Oil Soap. -tiny amount-
