I've seen this before ... a guy earns a reputation for building electric guitars, maybe even sells one to Herr Ehrich von Slowhand or His Highness Neal, the Duke of Schon or someone like that; then he one-offs a mandolin and his fans think the mandolin is worth as much as one of the guitars. It ain't necessarily so, not if the guy has no cachet among mandolinists.

So I'm thinking this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/WHTIE-ABALONE-INLAY-SOLID-MAPLE-ELECTRIC-MANDOLIN-HANDWORK-3861-/220922276132?pt=Guitar&hash=item336ffe6924) might be a cheap way to buy a lot of inlay blanks.

This to me is an obvious fraudulent auction: THE GIBSON MANDOLIN STYLE F-4 W CASE INSTRUMENT (http://www.ebay.com/itm/GIBSON-MANDOLIN-STYLE-F-4-W-CASE-INSTRUMENT-/370574522162?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5647f67732). My apology if this has already been discussed.
Besides the obvious, if you grab a section of real text and Google it you'll see the problem. In this case, take:
NUMBER INSIDE HOLE SAYS 80899
surround it with quotes and plug it into Google and that forces it to find the entire string, as such (https://www.google.com/#sclient=psy-ab&hl=en&site=&source=hp&q=%22NUMBER+INSIDE+HOLE+SAYS+80899%22&fp=54fb3c36ebfe270b) by doing:
"NUMBER INSIDE HOLE SAYS 80899" in Google.
There's enough drama there to keep one busy for awhile, if bored. Personally I'd never bid or buy anything listed on yakaz.com. Have seen more than enough bad goo coming from that one.

That's been going on, intermittently, for months with that particular set of photos. Let's hope the mandolin's real owner never needs to sell it on eBay.

My goodness, I think Antoniotsai has officially spent too much time in the spray booth. A Mandobird copy (http://www.ebay.com/itm/HIGH-QUALITY-SOLIDWOOD-MAPLE-ELECTRIC-MANDOLIN-4-STRINGS-HANDWORK-3919-/220930626538?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item33707dd3ea)? Really?

Has anyone out there tried a Risa Les Paul style electric saprano uke (on ebay) with a mandolin tunning? It looks like it is workable. It has a 363 mm (14.29 inch) scale length, but with the adjustable bridge perhaps one could get a 13 7/8 length out of it? They also have a Tenor Uke LP style that they say is compatible with mandolin tuning, but it is 432mm, which would be about a 17inch length. Do you think they mean "Mandola" instead??

Very cool for a starter (no financial interest on my part), though I don't think Leo Fender would appreciate or agree with the spec "Modified F-style body shape". :)

It's from a Saga kit. If I'm not mistaken, this particular instrument was on Craig's List for a while in either Prescott or Phoenix.

Okay, basic question - why are some 4 string and some 8 string?
mrmando
Jan-25-2012, 11:12am
Some people are cheapskates and want a pack of 8 strings to last twice as long.
No, seriously ... when you plug in, you don't need the extra volume or sustain that paired strings give you. If a string pair is slightly out of tune, it sounds a lot worse through an amp than it would acoustically. And if your goal is to sound less like a mandolin and more like a guitar, that goal is easier to achieve with single courses.

You can also add some chorus to make a 4 string sound a little more like a 8 string .

I think I can help you on this, even though I am no mandolin expert. I actually brought the 4 string version from Dillion after Ric made them pull it it off the internet. I called them at Dillion USA and talked to them about that. They said ric has people that do nothing but look for potential violations. Dillion said they talked to ric and ric would let them go forward if they made a few modifications, one being to modify the tear-drop shape of the pickguard. Apparently, they also changed the body style as the prototype I own has the body concave near the tailpiece. This is a nice place to rest your arm, but I'm sure it is expensive to manufacture. The people at Dillion said they were going to add binding, a pearlloid pickguard without a teardrop shape, and start marking it next year.
I think this is a great electric mandolin for the mass market, and here is why: for the
price, it is almost impossible to get a semi-hollow body electric mando with a neck with great access all the way up the fret board. First, the semi-hollow body aspect. I own an Eastwood electric, and I like it, but it feels like strapping on a cement block to your neck if you're used to an acoustic mando. Second, the neck to body joint on the Eastwood starts to heal-up at the twelfth fret. The Dilllion doesn't do that until about the fifteenth fret.
As to your issue with the tone control - that also seemed to happen to me, so first thing was that I took it into the local guitar shop. The guy there explained to me that the tone "worked", but that it didn't have a large enough "cap" on it. Being older, I said "what is a 'cap'"? He said he meant a capacitor. Apparently, all a tone switch does is cut off the treble. Since electric mandolins a notorious for having a difficult time picking up the tone on the A and E strings, there was no treble sound to cut out. As an example of this theory, we took an old phaser pedal an hooked up the Dillion to it. It seemed to have no effect, as there was no tone range of sound to sweep.
So I had them install a larger "cap" on the tone control and that took care of everything in terms of electronics. But I would advise you to get an Almuse pick-up anyway - they seem to be a great company and understand mandolins.
One final word on the neck - The local guitar shop also set the intonation for me, which involved filing down the nut and re-working a few frets so it didn't buzz. The neck now feels as good as my 5-string Koren made Fender Electric FM 60E-SB. So yes - it is a good product, but a little quality control would make it a great product!
Has anyone identified the correct Almuse upgrade for this pickup?

bahama, this thread is for discussing electric mandolins on eBay. You might want to start a new thread for your question, since it isn't about an electric instrument.

There isn't a direct replacement because the original pickup is either a four or five string bass pickup which is larger than an Almuse. The bass pickup, in my opinion, is too mellow for the mandolin. The two options are to either retrofit a new pickup ring or see if Pete will make a pickup that will fit the existing ring. I'd guess that the solution is to make a new pickup ring or better yet simply design a new pickguard that would cover the pickup and the knobs. This would give you more room to add a switch comfortably too.
