Long story short: I used liquid hide glue to attach the tone bars. The glue is now dry - what should I do?
Options:
1) Don't worry - I've got plenty of good karma in the bank.
2) Shave the tone bars down as far as I can and carefully add water to the tops of the remainders. The water will eventually seep down into the glue and allow me to remove what's left of the tone bars.
3) I'll take the best suggestion I get here.
Thanks!

I would not use any water. IF you remove them shave them down with a chisel as close as you feel comfortable doing and then sand them or use a scraper to finish it up.

Heat is what is usually used to soften hide glue. I assume it would work here.

If it's going to worry you, by all means replace them.
Bill's right, carve them out and make new ones. I don't know about liquid hide glue, but a tone bar installed with hot hide glue is nearly impossible to remove by wetting or even steaming the glue joint (DAMHIKT).
I'd carve them out with a finger plane followed by a scraper and then sandpaper to re-establish the surface for the new bars.
Carve 'em down, they'll probably fall off anyway. That glue won't even hold a stamp on a letter! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Thanks for the great advice, as always, folks. I've shaved/sanded off the tone bars so that I'm back to the pencil lines I'd drawn before I glued the tone bars down. Guess I won't be making that mistake again! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
