As I was doing some Friday Cafe waltzing I happened upon this topic:

Cafe Topic (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=12;t=54327;)

Well about 4 or 5 post down is a nice message a loving spouse had written inside a gift to here ever so lucky husband!

So, it got me to thinking.... I know that's a dangerous thing!

Have you as a builder or otherwise ever written or had something written inside a mandolin that you either built or had built.

What have you found that you did not expect there?

...mine only had something about 1924 and some Loar name! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I had the name of my daughter (who I love more than life itself) written on the label of a custom Adamas mandolin (one of only three ever made):

Yes, I was mercenary enough to sell it last year. She just started the violin, and no doubt will be playing mandolin some day. There will be plenty more opportunities to honor her in another, maybe more appropriate heirloom.

OK Bill, here ya go, try to weigh in with some of the big guns of the Cafe. Oh man look, these guys have posts in the thousands and they also have fun and heart-felt stuff written inside the instruments. I gotta get a life, it just says Adi/Red Maple inside this regular ole BRW.

I have a whole paragraph written between the tone bars on mine. I can't read it though, not enough light and mirror script.

Now that there is funny, I don't care who you are. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

I have a mandolin with a message that was written to me by a lady and put inside it. #It's on a little scrap of paper that just floats around in there. #I was not supposed to find it but it was plainly visible through an F hole one day. #It's a very nice message! #I sent a reply via the inside of her mandolin and it has yet to be found.

My Gibson Army-Navy Custom "pancake" (vintage 1987, signed by Steve Carlson) has "L Catello" written inside in felt-tip marker. #I understand Louie Catello ran or runs Catello & Sons in Berlin NH, a store where you can buy an aluminum boat, a chain saw, or a Gibson mandolin. #The flashy little "pancake" was apparently his personal axe, at least for awhile, until John Bernunzio got hold of it and sold it to me.

I also have a "mystery" no-maker's-name gut-strung banjo from the 1880's that I use for 19th-century music; only ID on the instrument is "Ed Costello" written on the back of the head in India ink. Owner, builder, who knows?

Andy Poe put an interesting note on the back of the top plate of mine, I found it with an aircraft engine borescope one day while taking a look at the inards of my Poe mandolin it reads "With passion were you created, with passion let your voice be heard." I thought that was a very cool little diddy. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
