I need to tap into the vast warehouse of information possessed by mandocafe experts. I recently bought a Gibson Mandolin-Banjo. The label inside the rim identifies it as a Style MB-Jr.

The punched in or pressed in numerals on the inside also read 11139-A-18.

Any one have an estimate of the age of the instrument. I know that many in the mandolin world hold banjos in disdain and would prefer to listen to fingernails on a blackboard. But, this one set up nicely and actually plays OK, just different.

As I expressed in another locale, I payed $400 for it, perhaps a bit too high or too low? What do cafe members think?

I do have to admit that it sounds a bit harsh when compared to my three other mandos.

If your Junior is in very good condition, I would say that you made a good purchase. Although it is at the low end of Gibson mandolin banjos, it is a quality instrument. You might visit the BanjoHangout web site for some input from owners.

Not me!

Sorry I can't help you with the information you're looking for, but I do want to say I think the mandolin banjo is a beautiful instrument! I have a Gibson
MB-3 from 1923 (from the Loar period!) and it's the best instrument I have for playing blues and rags from the 1920s (esp. jug band music).

I think you will love playing it. You can put a lttle foam or sheep skin inside to mellow out the harshness or overtones if needed.
