If anyone has read David Long's interview over at Co-Mando, you will find him (sort of) answering several questions about "right hand technique." #He mentions the importance of Mike Compton's RH, how he spent a whole week, or something, working with Frank Wakefield, again especially on RH stuff. #They all refer to Monroe's RH.

Now, I surely understand the importance of the right hand, but just what the heck do those guys DO with the right hand that is so special? #Long never once gets specific about this. #Nothing about pick grip, loose wrist, or anything familiar to me. #

So, would someone like to take a stab at this? #Just what is the magic formula for good right hand technique??

Perhaps they were referring to the technique of picking with all down strokes, which Monroe did many times. (Lots of intros and breaks; Bluegrass Stomp pops into my mind as a tune played largely with down strokes.) Mike Compton is known as being a master of that technique, so possibly that is what the reference was to.

Mike Compton went over for several minutes how he holds his pick at a workshop I went to last fall.

He pretty much recommended holding the pick loose so it pivots on you index finger knuckle. This allowed the pick to do some of the work versus your wrist. Others that have been to one of his workshops maybe able to explain it better.
