View Full Version : Shellac over tru oil

I am finishing up the pearlized mandolin.

I shot a nice glitter coat as my final stain coat (there was some glitter left in the gun with the final black stain) and I loved the happy mistake.

I am finishing with tru oil, but it seemed to remove that final sparkle coat when I rubbed it out with steel wool in between coats...

If I put a little sparkle in with a shellac (thinking of using Liberon French Polish) over the Tru oil, will the finish be stable and work? or should I just finish up with the tru oil?? or can I mix in some glitter into the tru oil?

Thanks, ad

Never tried it over tru-oil but I can't imagine why it wouldn't. Shellac sticks to darn near anything. The old gibson finishes were shellac over an oil varnish.
