I just ordered a Collings MF from Greg Boyd, I played both Collings and Gibson (and others) around L.A. and the MF seemed the best around, I can't wait till it arrives.

Congratulations. I recently purchased a Weber from
Greg Boyd. He was great to work with.
There is a nice black face MF at Mass Street Music. #Sounded great. #Call them if you are interested. They also have a couple of MF5's and at least one MT2. #Mass Street is one of the larger Collings dealers and also a Cafe supporter. # Mass Street Music (http://www.massstreetmusic.com/mandos.php)
I love my MF5 and it just keeps getting better.

Greg is one heck of a quality dealer and Montana is a beautiful state...hope you get many a great year out of the collings...it's a great instrument and will certainly retain it's value if you ever want to trade...Steven

Hello Tone Monster,
So you say you test drove Collings and Gibson. your profile says you live in santa monica. I suspect you did your test drive at McCabes's. They had a MF5, MF, MTa and a F5G in the glass case. Up on the wall amongst the various Kentuckys and Fenders was a Breedlove quartz kf natural and burst and a Summit 100 and a godin a8. And some killer kamaka ukes too.
if you didn't do your test drive at mcabes's , where do you go in the LA area?
by the way i agree with you, the mf 5 there sounded very sweet.

I tested McCabes Collings Mf, MF5,MT,,Gibson FG,Breedlove(nice for the price) and a few lowerpriced on the wall.At Westwood Music a Gibson FG,A Collings MT,MF,MF5.
That's the shops I went to and the models I checked out.

That Summit at McCabes is a nice one, but the MF5 is perhaps the most perfectly finished mandolin I've ever seen. Sounded pretty tight however--but with some time playing it should sound very sweet IMO. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

jasona,
# i agree the mcacabes MF5 sounded a bit tight. #i think they all sort of did. but that mf5 was the best of the bunch.

If you play the MF5 for a few months, they turn into banjo killers! I know mine is.

I think Tonemonster went for a Prucha instead.

I played the MF, F9, and A9 today. All terrific sounding mandolins. I didn't have enough money in my pocket for any of the three, though.
