I have a three year old mandolin which I put Thomastik Infeld strings on a year ago with the intention of mellowing the tone because it sounded a bit ""high". Since I record all my music lessons, I have the means to compare the tone of the instrument over the last year. Well, it is much quieter now. Originally, I could be heard on the recordings with my instructor's mando, but now he is completely overpowering me. His instrument sounds the same throughout all recordings. Mine sounds so weak even though it is clearly evident that my attack has gotten much stronger. Enough of a change that I am thinking of either putting a maple bridge on or going to another set of strings. Or do both. I am going to put a set of J-74's on this weekend, and see what difference it makes. I had always debunked the opening up theory, but now I have to admit that in the last year something has changed. The only change to the instrument has been a fret dress a month ago. I am going to refret to banjo wire, then I think it will be time to upgrade soon after.
