I received an engraved Gibson tailpiece in the mail today (not the one in this photo). The seller says he's had it in a drawer for a good forty years, but he doesn't know how old it is. Can you help me? My other Gibson tailpieces are lovely but I think stamped. Is that correct? Here's one from a '23 F4, and I have a '25 A that looks the same.

Here's the one that just arrived. Clearly engraved, and with a fine engraving tool.

So when would this have been made? Is it a real Gibson tailpiece or a jeweler's copy? Would this be an F5 tailpiece?

An underexposed shot to emphasize the engraving.

The back is brass. Is that common or a tip-off or anything? I've included something white in the photo for color balance so you can see the yellowness of the metal. Thanks for your help.

Your new one looks like a (good) copy to me. The vintage ones, as far as I know, are stamped brass, and plated in nickel silver.
