Saw Del McCoury recently and noticed Ronnie has a pickup on his Gilchrist. Asked him after the show when he plays plugged in and he said he uses it whenever he plays rock and roll. I asked him if this was a Nashville thing and he said, nope I play all over.

Anybody know what bands Ronnie is sitting in on?

too bad, ronnie could play anything, and he would play rock as amazingly as he does bg.

Yeah, you gotta watch that boy!! I'm sure he could pull off anything he wanted.....anyone in the group for that matter. Talk about "Top of the Food Chain"!!

I think as busy as they are, he has no need or desire to step outside of Del and the Boys...at least for now.......very busy.

I don't think he was pulling my leg-Ronnie likes r&r, you can hear it. The only reason I can see he'd install a pickup is to play in settings with other amplified instruments/drums/etc. So my question remains, anybody know about these gigs?

I know he's sat in with the String Cheese Incident in Vail a few years back. He had to play Kang's acoustic mando (plugged in) because I don't think he had a pickup at the time.

Yes Ronnie does play quite a bit of Rock and Roll. If you watch real close, you may notice a dark blue van that tails their tour bus. When he gets off stage with dad, he hops in the van and runs off to the venue that features R&R and does that gig. Of course, he has to change clothes in the van. His BG clothes are not the proper R&R style. It's tough juggleing both jobs/lifestyles, but Ronnie is up for it. Oh yes, they go by "Ronnie and the Eyebrows", and they are starting to get airplay on XM.

Ronnie doesn't need a pick-up or a new band to rock and roll.....

Is the Gilcrist his main mandolin bluegrass and for other styles? I've seen him play on video, and could never identify the headstock.

Saw Del again at the String Summit in Oregon last night- they played a bit onstage with Jeff Austin and Yonder Mountain after their show- Ronnie just played into a mic and got plenty of volume. the mystery remains...

Ronnie & the Rockets, that's his r'n'r band. I went to the Zenith in Paris last monday and they opened the show for the Stray Cats 25th anniversary reunion tour, it was great and Ronnie seemed to have a great time. He was playing a 1958 Gretsch 6120 electric mandolin and the jam-session with Brian Setzer was one of a kind ! What a blast ! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

Can't say what he does now, but several years ago he did a couple of numbers on an album by the V-Roys, a now defunct Knoxville TN band. The album is titled "All About Town" and is worth the price for Ronnie alone, but is a solid R&R/Pop album with some BG influence. One of my favorites!
