My buddy and I perform as a mando/guitar duo...some originals, but we do almost the entire catalog of songs that Garica and Grisman performed in the early ninties together. Would that music be considered "old time"? I know the definition of that genre has been argued/discussed on here...but in a general sense, I was wondering if that's considered old time. if so...I really need to pursue more of the same type stuff. Thanks...

I've always called it Hippie Grass.
You should post some of your stuff on youtube, I'd love to hear it http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I think the type of music depends on the album. Shady Grove sounds Old Time to me. The thrill is gone is more like Dawg music in that there's a couple of styles. So What made an attempt at jazz but I don't think that jazz is a strong point for Garcia or Grisman.
In your search for more material, just do what those guys did: play songs that you like. There's plenty of good stuff that would sound great on mando/guitar/vocals.
as always with garcia and sometimes with grisman- it defies constricting to a single category. there is a bit of something for everyone and even when the tunes are generally within a genre- the interpretation bends strict categorization.
If I were to categorize it I would say it's classic country rock... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I just bought "Old and In the Way" from Vassar's site. I can't wait to hear it again.

You are correct man...shoulda saw that one coming. Guess I should've been mre specific with my original question...we do the entire Shady Grove album, songs like Fair Ellender, Casey Jones, Sweet Sunny South, were the kinds of songs i had in mind with my original question...

Old Time Funkgrass?
Have you heard the James Brown song they did? I think it's called "I'll Go Crazy"
It's on "All Around this World" along with a great version of Frankee Lee and Judas Priest (Dylan)
The James Brown number was probably NOT one of Jer's finer moments, but hats off for being open to whatever came along.

I think of the Shady Grove CD as a mixture of old-time, folk, jug band, acoustic blues. and sea shanties. I feel that the inability to categorize Garcia/Grisman is one thing that made them so wonderful and unique. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

At one show at the Warfield on my birthday, what a great time, They joked about what to call their collabaration. I think Griss said "Grateful Dawg" and Jerry came back saying "or Dawgful Dead"
Man, I miss that guy.
