I have the itch to try and do a little sound conditioning for my mandolin. I'd like to find some freeware to do tone generation via my pc and play with it from there through my sound system.
Any suggestions?

Try this free one:

The frequency chart (http://educate-yourself.org/lte/freqchartmusicalnotes28dec07.shtml) on this page is also very useful.
This post got me thinking, if these don't work I could fairly easily program an on-line tone generator. #And I have a new mandolin. #Hmmm...

You could also go to http://www.oldapps.com/CoolEdit.php and download CoolEdit96. It's an ancient free trial version, but its only limitation is you can't use all the features at once. It has a pretty fancy tone generator, can control harmonics, waveform, modulation. Noise too. The newer old versions do this too, along with more features added; I recommend 96 because it's a small file to download and easy to use.
Good luck
